LONDON 2012 - CAMERAS, BAGS, RESTRICTIONS, ETC - PLEASE POST HERE

No problem as long as you cover the brand name of your dslr, lenses camera bag and memory cards with duck tape!
 
no tripods/monopods or silly long lenses I think...
 
So will i be ok with a 5dmk2 and 17-40L in the Olympic park and stadium do you think?
 
I foresee chaos - the official book, "Capture the Moment: A Practical Guide to Sports Photography London 2012 and Beyond" shows example photos taken with a 70-200 (another uses a 400mm) and OCF and suggests that a 200-300mm lens is ideal.

Some will argue that this is aimed at pros with media accreditation, but as the book has a glossary which explains what aperture and autofocus are, as well as explaining what you would use a filter and a chamois for, I doubt it....

I doubt it really, surely 99.99% of people going know that as a spectator they are only going to get photos for use as personal mementoes of their day at the games, it's only a teeny tiny number of people who think they can take a 400mm lens and get photos good enough to sell or for publication from the stands.

I don't think anyone would really try and take a 400mm in, but I'll bet plenty of people will get stopped for taking in something like a D3000 and a 55-200....

Oh yes and U-turn over ban on 'unauthorised' snacks at Olympic venues after police fury. What's all this then? Police may now safely eat Walkers at the Olympics

olympics is just a fiasco they can say what you can and cant eat yeah right, not as I eat walkers crisps their carp anyway but to be told what you can eat is ridiculous

also the G4S recruits probable dont know what 30cm looks like without a ruler
you will probably see rullers at every stand to check if it fits
 
it doesnt state if its no 1 object bigger than 30cm or combined length of 30cm

If those over 50 are like me they too might not know what 30cm looks like, as I have to think a moment while I convert 30cm to 11 3/4 inch :lol::lol:
 
True. Tbh, I'm just taking the kit I feel is appropriate.
One body, one zoom lens, extra card and batteries. No flash.

If either the G4S teenagers or stand in military have a massive problem. ... I'll just start crying!! (probably just let me through then!!)

Seriously, I basically don't think I'll have the smallest or biggest piece of kit going through the gates. Should be fine.
 
read a new report on bbc some days ago regarding cameras.

Apparently no professional cameras allowed, any lenses over 30cm not permitted
 
My bet is you will not get in.... People and bags are being searched - Security is MASSIVE! If you are local or can get to your car and back quickly, go for it otherwise it might be a long way to go to be turned away.

You won't get a car anywhere near the venues (with the very vague possibility of Weymouth).

If you suspect that you kit is anywhere close to being oversized, don't take it.

The point I was really trying to make is that people should be more realistic as to why they are going to the games in the first place.
Your going to WATCH the events and get some photos as YOUR personal memento of the day, your not going as part of the media, your going to take photos to sell or be published.

Please don't pass on misleading BS advice Brad. Especially if you are indirectly advertising yourself (profile - Army) as someone that might know what is going on. You don't.

Individuals on the Cordon Force will have very little, if any, personal discretion as to what is and isn't allowed in.

The guys working in the search booths will have enough grief without multiple punters turning up saying 'Oh but this bloke told me....'

The rules will be the same whether G4S are conducting the search or, as in our case, a Reg Bn.

That's not the point.

Mixed messages lead to confusion.

If your 'Camera unit' is over 30cm in length/width, IT WILL NOT GET IN.

At present there's no definition of 'unit', so if you are trying to bring kit in, make sure that your lens(es) are unmounted.

There are no facilities to store confiscated equipment, so the kit will either be junked or you will have to walk away.

Just to say, I've been on the Park since May 27th and even our accredited photographers have issues with security. I would not bring any decent cameras/lenses as a specator.
 
your best bet is the black and small 200mm f/2.8 L + 1.4x or so. Luckily they are affordable too.

Unfortunately, most shots will be useless due to restrictions. {I am going to ignore the whole thing like it wasn't happening and go away from the country in the Alps}
 
I'm taking the risk, I love this hobby too much to miss this opportunity.
I'm not sure how I can help my young kids remember the experience without having pictures to cement the memories.
Seeing as I don't have a P&S, plus my 4 year old loves taking photos on "Daddies Camera". Its a risk worth taking in my book.

I might even tell them I'm carrying the kit for my little boy!!

OK lets say you get in, tyhje next hurdle will be taking it out and shooting - If seen by security you will be removed! What a waste of a night! And your kids get to see Daddy removed and worse have to leave with you?!!
