anyone have any advice on how to make a logo to put on my photos as i want to start a flickr account... i have had a friend make me one but its quite big as i would just like a plain one... i only have windows vista and the basic word, publisher ect
thanks :)

Rosie, do you mean like a protective copyright watermark that's automatically applied to your photos to stop other people using them, or do you mean a small logo to give yourself some sort of "identity"?

Basic image editing software is capable of doing the latter, but it's more difficult to watermark properly. What software do you use for editing images?

hi.. more towards copyright tbh... i havent got the software to edit my photos as i am new to the photography business and i just have a portfolio that i would like to advatise :)

if you make the pictures around 6x4 most people will not try and take it as when you blow them up they go all blur

Faststone Photo Resizer is a free program which will do a basic text or image overlay for copyright protection as well as resizing a batch of photos for easier web handling. Just be aware that whatever you use, the watermark needs to be invasive enough to stop it being cloned out but discreet enough to not distract from the image.

You could download Gimp for Windows, it's free open-source image editing software designed to rival Photoshop.

http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html

It may not be the easiest software to use (only used it on a Mac but it should be the same on windows) but it's capable of doing what you want to.

Paul.

Ps, the manual for Gimp is a seperate download, and you will need it!

Use the text feature on photoshop. Click on your image so you get a curser, this should auto create a text layer.

Type what you wanna add, i now have mjk2010 preceeded by the copyright symbol.

You can then highlight the text and make it the size, colour and font that you like. You can also drag it to the desired location.

Now using the layer control panel you can change the opacity of the layer. So the text becomes more see through.

When you save, save as jpeg and the orginal image and the text layer will be combined and you have your watermark.

I tend to edit mine, add the watermark and then save as a psd (photoshop file). I then go in and change the image size to max 1000 pixels on the longest side. I then save the image again as the same file name but with 'web' on the end as a jpeg.

See my flickr for examples.

edit: there are more complex ways of doing this. do a google search for adding watermarks in photoshop.

Rosie

Without any photoediting software it's not going to be easy.

Can you export jpeg images from Publisher? If so you could make up a document in publisher. Add you logo etc. , then export them, as jpegs. Don't make the page too big .
You may have to experiment.

I really would suggest you look at some editing software. The GIMP is fine and free. Photoshop Elements is an excellent programe as well, not free, but good value for money. ( Also get a book on whichever program you use) Look on it as an investment, rather than an expenditure

Photoshop elements can add watermarks in batch and resize photos...

You can get the older PSE 7 for about £40-50...

thanks guys... will defo be looking into it all suggestions as i havent got PS but planning on geting it... i also need to get up to date with my computer as all i do is upload my pics without editing ect.. so i will just have a play around and just teach myself... i only know the basics of my laptop :)

Along the same lines as John's suggestion, if you wanted to do this in Word it's relatively easy.
(I'm not particularly familiar with Publisher so can't help you with that)

Insert your jpeg into a new Word document.
Open a text box over the jpeg and choose your font size and colour - then arrange the text as you want to see it over the top of your image.
Group the jpeg and the text box together, then save the image as a new jpeg.

You could even save a copy of the text box to a blank document to reuse on subsequent photos.

It's not a particularly elegant solution and no real substitute for proper editing software, but you will get something resembling the result that you want.

Longer term, editing software is the way forward and there are some free packages out there as suggested above.

Just to pick up on another point that was touched on above, watermarking is by no means a necessity for showing your images on Flikr.
You automatically have legal copyright to them and as long as they're at a small size, they're not much use for anyone to do anything else with.
IMO unless the watermark is very discreet it really does detract from the image you want to show . . . and if it is very discreet anyone intent on using your images illegally would be able to clone it out.

You can do it in Picasa and you can download it free
