Hi , can anyone tell me a way of locking my photos so that they cannot be printed when put on a dvd or will people always be able to access the print function or just screen print? i'm editing using cs2 if this helps! :bang:

Sorry mate no way of doing this.

A big watermark across the front of the image is the best discouragement ;)

that's what i thought put just wanted other peoples knowledge on subject - thanks for fast replies, if anyone else does know any different please let us all know.
thanks again chaps.

Trust me... You can't lock a photo. I use thing like disable right click, but it's easy to get round if you know how.
If you want pix on the net with no chance of people using them, watermark it :)

you can use the program pics2exe. this puts all the photos into 1 exe file, yes they can do screen grabs but the quality would be low.

You can also watermark them

thats what i'm trying to avoid as i dont want prospective clients seeing poor images of my work just coz some cheapskate cant be bothered payin a couple of quid or asking me to do it.
nice nickname by the way - was mine at school a long time ago

Your pics will look fine at 72dpi on a screen - there is no advantage in making higher resolution files available if only for screen viewing.

I'm sure I've seen software advertised that claims to time lock a DVD so that images can't be copied or printed before a date you set. I can't find a link to it right now! It is not possible to do this on the internet but I think it might be from DVD.

If they're online you can diable the right-click on the webpage so that it's harder to download them or you could embed them in a Flash applet to do the same thing.

Doesn't stop screen grabs but that's low quality anyway.

Most web images are fairly small sizes so as long as you don't post your full res, full size versions they're only ever going to be able to get a limited version of your work.

Watermark limits the usefulness of any illicitly downloaded shots so you should consider that too, as well as clearly stating the licence that your work is covered by.

Disabling right click does b****r all if someone wants the images, all you need to do is run firefox with the web developer plugin and you can pull all the images from a page very easily.

Flash based sites are a bit better, but one thing you can never stop people doing is a simple screen grab. It may look relatively rubbish when its printed but some people simply do not care.

the OP was asking about images on a DVD though not on a website.

If they are on a DVD and the OP doesn't want them printed then they may as well be saved as low resolution to suit viewing on a monitor.

Steve.

A slideshow makes it harder, that'll stop about 75% of people getting the images easily, but the "hardcore" will always find a way.

thanks guys, all helpful and food for thought. did wedding as favour to a lifelong friend and now they just want pics on dvd to do with as they please - only told me this after i've spent best part of 100 hours editing them. GRRRRRRRRRR !

Reading the above it would seem that only putting low res images with watermarks on the cd/dvd is the only way, would that be correct.

If it was just a favour for a friend, why not just give them the full resolution pictures? It's not like you're going to profit from any of them.

Ooohhhh you should have put that on the original post......
Very hard one as being a life long friend... but I wouldn't give then the dvd.
If anything give them all teh shots on 7x5 and rely on extra sales from them?

You could use something like Proshow Gold, but as has been said it's not infallible, couple with watermarks and low res pictures. But then you've got to stop them copying the disc !

I've turned them into DVD movies in the past.
You can do this really easily in iMovie, or you can buy some software to do it on Windows.

This embeds them into the vob file, and they end up only being able to do a low res screen capture.

They can also play them on the TV, and for some reason this makes people think differently.
