I have a feeling I know the answer to this one but would be grateful for any views.

We have lost the keys to our uPVC double glazed french doors. At present they are locked shut.

Is the easiest way to sort out this problem to contact a locksmith and get either a new key cut or a new lock installed? Or is there a simpler way?

Anyone any idea of what a locksmith may charge?

Thanks

Dave

get a locksmith. I think we paid £80 last time which was money well spent.

How does the 'second' door open?
If it's hidden bolts (cant see them when doors are closed) you are screwed and need the locksmith as mentioned above.
IF you can see the bolts, lift them, just push the doors open. It's simple enough to buy a new barrel and keys and fit them yourself.
If I can do it, anyone can!

Thanks for the replies. I thought it would be a locksmith job. Unfortunately the second door has hidden bolts which can only be seen, and unlatched, when the first one is opened.

Come into the room and say to your wife "That's the locksmith called to fix the French windows" then turn around and the missing keys will be lying in front of you.

No - you'll find them only after the lock has been replaced and the locksmith paid...

LOL. thanks Steep and Byker, I had a felling all along that the just as I had got someone to sort it, I'd find a bunch of keys.

Were they in the house or did you have then fitted? If you have the original receipt for them by any chance then there's just a possibility that the key number might be on it or the company might have it? It's a long shot, but it's cheap!

stupid question but is there a number on the key side of the lock? If so, can prob get a duplicate key by quoting the code and make of door/lock to a double glazing firm / locksmith...

Thanks for the suggestions Peter and Lynton. Unfortunatley we no longer have any receipt for them and there is no number on the lock, but good ideas anyway.

Is it a euro lock?...if so PM me and I'll tell you how to get it open but you'll have to replace the barrel of the lock after.

Take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

Sorry, it's not in the spirit of TP rules to post stuff like this.

Even though you dont have the receipt the firm that fited them may have some paperwork that identifies the key numbers etc.
