A member of my family has booked a trip to loch ness at the end of July and I am going to tag along purely to take some nice landscape shots. The are staying at a park right on the water so I will get plenty shots there!

Is there anyone that knows the area well? Some tips on nice locations on or near the loch would be appreciated. Also what is the public transport like in the area as I won't always have transport.

Has anyone got any links to any landscape photographers with loch ness and surrounding areas in their portfolio?

Any help appreciated..

I'm not sure what the access is like now but the old house owned by Aleiter Crowley used to be a good spot, Jimmy Paige owned it when I was sneakling about many years ago :suspect: Public transport wasnt good then but cant say what its like now, hiring a bike is always an option if you get stuck.
OHH midge cream (Avons is supposed to be good just now ) and waterproofs , dont beleive the drought nonsense from down south its wetter than a fish tank up here.

The locks on the canal at Fort Augustus will give some good shots, probably walkable from where you are staying? You could drive the A87 to Skye, the scenery is amazing whatever the weather!

Depends on how much travelling around you're prepared to do. It's a big landscape and repays a bit of exploration. As mentioned, Neptune's Staircase is a productive local spot. Scenery-wise both the road to the Isles and the trip to Glen Coe will yield good reults for an hour's worth of driving. Queen's View and Glen Shiel are both excellent stop offs on the Road to the isles while Glen Coe pretty much speaks for itself while at the top you've got Rannoch Moor and Glen Etive. Both snapped to death but spectacular nonetheless.

Inverness is a lovely town - if youre into that type of photography

Some great info there guys will check the locations out when I back from work!

Anyone know of any inspirational images of the areas on and around the loch? I have searched here and google but not much luck! Plenty of Nessie rubbish though!!

Take a trip to Dores at the north end of the loch for a stunning view down the 22 miles of the loch. There's also a also a nice pebble beach beside the pub.

I have a couple of sets on flickr of Loch Ness and the surrounding area if you want to check them out..

The South East side of the Loch is the most scenic - head for Whitebridge out of Fort Augustus. As someone else said, Dores is a lovely place to stop with it's beach and view of the Loch. You'll also find Monster Hunter Steve Feltham there.

When you're in the area I'd highly recommend doing Glen Cannich and Affric - stunning scenery there! Also, Glen Strathfarrar is another one to put on your list. If your lucky you'll get some shots of the deer too!

I'm not sure about public transport as I had a car but in Fort Augustus and Drumnadrochit there's a bus service.

I have photos somewhere from a few years ago. There are small waterfalls at Invermoriston beside the old road bridge that are worth stopping for en-route to Fort Augustus if heading along the A82 from Drumnadrochit.

You can get good views of the Loch and surrounding hills if you climb the hill next to Invermoriston. Last time I was up it was a dull rainy day and I've only got a couple of uninspiring photos on FB: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.396481537874.173211.518982874&l=571372b277 . I did cheat this last time out, and drove all the way to the top on the Forestry Commission road after getting special permission in advance.

No tips on locations or such but as has been mentioned previously you need midgie protection. Avon Skin so Soft is your best bet. It's a moisturiser but has something in it that prevents the midgies biting you. Google it!

My better half was saying that they have taken the ingrediant out that helped with stopping the dreded midge, not sure TBH as usually they leave me alone and I dont use anything.

How long will you be up there and do you know what route your taking to get there, if time isnt a problem driving north from glasgow on the A82 is in my mind ( but Im biased I live on the coast) the most scenic route but it will take you longer than the more direct route to inverness.

I have no idea what route we will take ? I'm not certain they even know yet! But I bet they are open to suggestions....lol

Would love to see your pics when you get back, I'm doing a campervan tour of Scotland (taking in Loch Ness) in September.

Lol don't hold your breath mate will you! Landscape is another thing that holds a fascination but I'm not that sure about what I'm doing!!

being local to Loch Ness, there isn't really that much around the loch itself to photograph that hasn't already been done thousands of times. I'm not sure which park you are staying at, if you PM me and let me know I can help you from there. As said the South Side of Loch Ness is nicer, but if your at the Drumnadrochit end there is also places you can head for from there.

Local Transport is like everywhere up here...pretty non existant lol, your not going to be able to jump on a train or bus every 10 minutes :)

If you want to see stunning scenery then go via or come back via the A82. You won't regret a slightly longer journey!

If it's Lochs you want I would drive the half hour into Strathspey. Particularly Aviemore where there are sone very scenic lochs (Loch Morlich, Loch an Eiliean, Loch Pityoulish). All smaller lochs very close together and you can get some stunning images with the Cairngorm mountains in the background. Search on flickr or look at my gallery.

If you fancy a day on the water Ian at Great Glen Lodges has a boat for hire for sightseeing, fishing or a bit of both on Loch Lochy. He does full or half days and there is a pair of ospreys nesting about 30 yards from the lochside and he will do a pass of them if you ask him.
If you did have some transport the 'road to nowhere' is a fantastic run. Take the A87 at Invergarry and turn left toward Kinlochhuorn, stunning scenery especially when you get toward the Knoydart peninsula.

Have fun

Andy
