Yes
i don't know if many people on here will be able to help me but the car club i belong to is looking for pictures to make a calendar, so i was thinking of taking some shots of my car and some other members cars tomorrow night

i know of a few places to go but if anyone has an ideas i would be extremely grateful to hear them as i don't know Glasgow too well, bearing in mind this will be at night so it will have to be relatively safe ;)

thanks
Richie

A great place would be the SECC and the Science Center, you'll have the stunning architecture in the background.

There is the IMAX down there too.

All those images are geotagged, so take a look at the flickr map for directions.

great ideas mate and thats actually one of the areas of Glasgow that i do know :)

i will definitely head down there for some shots

How about one of the many multi-storie car parks i have seen some nice car pics done in them at night.

You can forget the Science Centre as a location for a car shoot unless you get permission first - last time I tried one there the jobsworth security guard was out giving me grief within about 2 minutes of setting the lights up...

One place that might be worth trying is The Barras as obviously it's not in use at night.....

Amen to the science centre, I got 3 shots before jobs worth told me to do one and that was at midnight.

What colour of cars you got to deal with and how many? There's loads of places around Glasgow but there isnt one area that will work with all cars.

Ive just finished a car calendar (and a babes one) so if you need a hand let me know.

Need to watch yourself with using images of the science centre for stuff like calendars, Rikki, the lassie from the marketing office was prattling on about any images taken there that show the buildings as infringing their copyright:shake:

my car is blue and there will be a silver car and a black one hopefuly. Rikki i take you're "Mr Strathy"? lol

thanks for the locations guys, i just went and spent £60 on a new battery and an in car charger so hopefuly that will keep me going

this is the colour of my car

Guilty as charged LOL Since youre from the shire do you know young Halpo? He knows a few locations down there that are good, add to that a few in Glasgow itself.

Drivers at charing cross is good and uncover, quite bright and roller shutter doors :

There's also "the location" up off the EK Expressway at Hamilton International where everyone and their dog has shot cars:

You shouldn't have a problem, if you are confronted tell them your a hobbyist or something. For a city that prides itself on it's architecture it sure tries its hardest to stop people taking photos of it all. You'll be fine I reckon. Good luck.

Yes they are prize nuggets, though there is nothing they can do as its not private property in front of it, not barried, no signs etc

Another good one was in front of the cathedral but they have bollards up at night now.

Actually it turns out it is private property, I assumed it was public land too. Their site also extends much further than you would imagine (basically everything from the river side west and south, including the new office buildings behind) - we were chased all over the place, even after telling them it wasn't a commercial shoot.

Sharon Lyons at their marketing department (as it was she that chased us) is the person to contact if you need clarification...

I would be very surprised if that turns out to be true.
Glasgow Science Centre is a charity & I very much doubt that the city would just give away all that extra land to them (remember that the BBC building just across is on land from Glasgow city council - you can of course shoot from there).
Also, I would put money on the road past the car park down to (but not including) the bus turning area having been adopted by the city which makes it public.

I wasn't asking for an opinion, I was stating a fact. I've seen a map with the Science Centre property line on it and we were followed right up to said line by Ms Lyons.

it also quite clearly states on the Science Centre website (Which you no doubt read before making your comment ;)) that a fee may be chargeable for filming or photography for commercial use, such as Rikki's calendar.

I'm sure you're also aware that a fee can be levied by the council for photography/filming in George Square and any of the parks or other "public" areas in the city, again details of this can be found on the relevant websites.

Feel free to ring the marketing department at the Science Centre and speak to Sharon Lyons or Margaretta Richards if you don't believe me...

When I was working for a mag full time 3 years ago they were just as bad too. Went in to see if it was ok to shoot outside and the woman inside started going on about forms, charges, this and that. Wasnt worth my time then so we buggered off to the Quay and used the bridgework instead.

The rentacop at the S.C. didnt seem too fussed apart from saying we couldnt park on the tiles right beside the centre itself so he was happy for us to much around elsewhere - we got moved from the first shot though that I posted above.

I dont think its possible for them to retroactively try and get money off me or anyone else for having their building in the background ***. Doesnt matter if they say on their website about it, I could write in my signature that you owe me £500 for reading my messages, no contact was entered into. Plus the taxi rank, bus turning and everything else is open ended right into the place so it would be a real toughy for them to fight.

Anyway, my calendars a freebie so wouldnt fall foul of any commercial investigation thankfully :D

hillington is good

So long as you are on public land then the people can't do **** about the science centre or the SECC in the background, for one thing its not going to be the main subject and they won't own the copyright to the design so they can't charge if you take a picture of it. They can only rent you time on their land.

im a bit embarrassed to post these pics now lol but maybe you guys could give me some pointers on what i've done wrong or what i should have done

i think the main thing i need to to is take my time setting up the shot as alot of them are of center

Practice makes perfect they say.
The 1st one I think you have focused on the church more than the cars.

Most of the other ones are too dark,Maybe bump up the iso, lower shutter speed and a higher aperture.
And maybe keep them straight as I personally don't like the angles of the last 2.

Im sure other member will give you some hints and tips as they are doing this all the time.

im not keen on angles either and it was actually my mate who took the angled ones i just forgot to put that in the post

there is a pic of my car (blue) infront of the armadillo thats straight but there is a railing at the side

thanks for the comments and tips

Your main problem, especially with the dark blue car, is light. The car is dark so shots at night are going to be a problem. The shots I showed at night of the white car are mainly using available light as white will just soak it up, the darker cars have flash used - and poah's shots are mainly in daylight.

yeah i think i need to invest in a flash gun, all of those shots we without flash because i hate my pityful onboard flash

i sorted the last pic i posted by croping it slightly and it only too about a minute and a half :)

I know this car.:D

I think the shots that you've come away with probably are not the best, but one thing they do give you is some ideas for future shots. You can tell the lighting if off and perhaps the composition isn't the best but I reckon a revisit with some remote flash guns and some abstract perspectives and you'll get a good result.

Glad to see that the Armadillo was lit up, as they've been skimping on the electricity bills recently.

Are you involved with FAM magazine? My car appeared in there, albeit a very small picture. ha ha.

Really? I didn't know that. I've been away from the car scene for about 3 years now.

Was one of the editors, left in 2006 and then the thing self destructed a year later. Impecible timing on my part LOL :D

I would be very interested in seeing said map & the issuing authority (very easy to draw up false documents).
it also quite clearly states on the Science Centre website (Which you no doubt read before making your comment ;)) that a fee may be chargeable for filming or photography for commercial use, such as Rikki's calendar.

I've never queried their right to charge for commercial photography taking place within the boundaries of their property (public parks etc. are still legally owned by the council).
Enforcing it 100% is another thing & if you take photos from outside their boundary (even 2 inches) I really can't see that they can do anything at all.
Feel free to ring the marketing department at the Science Centre and speak to Sharon Lyons or Margaretta Richards if you don't believe me...
but would I believe that they are actually telling the gospel truth or merely what they believe to be true or are trying to spin? ;)

edit: btw the Science Centre currently runs at a loss & there is no guarantee of it's long term survival ...

Are there not plans for a new stadium or theater to be built down there?

there's a 12,000 seater theatre/stadium/venue & a new carpark being built across the river by the SECC.
