Does anyone know of an online resource for finding photographic locations? Is there a database anywhere that is searchable with pictures from the area?

At the moment to find interesting locations, I'm having to go through a list of potential places via flickr and see if it's photogenic, but this is very time consuming and hit or miss.

A database of previously visited locations with notes from other photographers would be incredible useful as I have limited time to travel around as I work full-time, and being stuck in Essex, there seems to be somewhat of a lack of interesting place to visit.

Hello

I was in tesco (Braintree Marks Farm) at the weekned and saw they had some books on Essex & East Anglia, they had loads of great photos in with the location underneath.

I may go buy 1 or 2, should have got them really as only £5 each.

Maldon is good, along the front, also Heybridge Basin.

Bradwell on Sea has a nice beach with some cool long grass, a little church etc.

There is a nice Windmill in Thaxstead too.

Finchingfield has some nice things apparently.

Colchester Zoo always good for photos of animals.

There is (if still there) an old war plane at Stebbing Airfield.

there is that thing where you can pin stuff on..google maps is it? we should start a TP one

This was posted on here a while back. http://www.treckr.co.uk/

It has the potential to be very good, but not many people have made the effort to post locations. I'm guilty of it too. I posted three or four locations when it first began, and have not really been on much since. :(

EDIT: Damn, beaten to it. :D

Thanks for the suggestions so far chaps, I'll take a look. It seems there is a gap/niche for an easy to use location photographer database online.. I wonder if it would be possible to scrape flickr images geo-information via their api and have them on a searchable map...

Edit: Just tried Treckr - only 4 locations found for my search..disapointing, but better than nothing.

actually, I was considering making a google maps for something like this.

Trekr site seems good, if empty :(

I think the fundamental problem with those kind of websites is that the success is built upon the critical mass of people to submit enough information.

A mashup site to scrape public sites like flick would be ideal. Flickr River is quite good but only when you search for a specific place, I would ideally like to be able to stipulate what i'm looking for in a general area, and then have directions/notes and photo's shown, i'm a little surprised someone hasn't already done it

i asked a similar question a while ago. no one seemed interested.
on another forum im on there is a section called photographic locations
inside there are 2 sections
one called location recommendations were people post on places they have been. with directions photos maps etc
and another called location requests were people ask for advice on places they may be visiting.
its a real handy section, and im sure it would be very popular on here

How are you using Flickr for this? I find the map view invaluable when doing location research, especially with thumnails at the bottom. I don't think it could get any better really, ie ruins near colchester essex:

Its good if you already know what you want to do and where - i.e ruins, but if I want landscape locations, if I don't already know where I want to go, there is no easy way to find suggestions with images and notes.

For example, if I want to shoot some coastal landscapes, I would have to go through flickr and specifically search for place names, which is no good as I'm looking for the place names in the first place, so it's a bit of a catch 22.

In an ideal world, I would type in: landscapes essex coast, or something similar, and I would have then a list of suggestions accompanyed by photos.
