Currently looking for a kit to do location shoots, as currently my location portraits are lacking dramatic lighting, both foreground and background.

Any ideas?
 
Your question is somewhat vague...

Are you currently using any lighting? if so what?

Is mains supply going to be a problem, or do you want to avoid it?

Whats your budget?
 
I have access to a large studio with 3 1000W Bowens and a wide range of extras, however this is colleges.
I want my own kit, but I release I can't get something as expensive as this, my budget is upto £400.
Looks like my opinion is just going to be another SB900 to go along with my SB900 and SB600 at this rate :D

Get some light stands, and light modifiers - Flash in the Pan sells some good stuff - he has a long thread in the "Advertisers" section in the shopping forums.

He also has some cheap flash units - but you'll need to use manual as they are pretty basic. You'll probably also want some remote triggers... (FiTP sells them, too)
 
you could get a 3 x 200w head set up for that kinda budget if you wanted.

Or you could get another hotshoe flash like you suggest - all depends on what will suit your style :) I would think the hotshoe option would be a lot more portable though.
 
so its battery powered studio heads or speedlights

you have a pair of speedlights, you could buy another some radio slaves and lots of bits for budget and massively get into strobism - which is how I'd do it

Or hunt around for battery heads I head good things about lencarta safari and its the only thing near your budget

Strobist route then,

I'd buy....

2 x SB 25/26/28 or Vivitar 285 from ebay
2x Konig Stands from Amazon
2 x Umbrella mounts & shoot through umbrella - Flash in The Pan
Radio triggers - Flash in The Pan
Gels (CTO/CTB/Window Green)
Some elastic bands, bits of cardboard, black straws, glue, hand wash gel containers etc to stick together and make some modifiers.

Oh, and 4 sets of Eneloop or Hybrio AA batteries with a charger

All of the above could be had for less than a single SB900.

The Lencarta Safari is well over double your budget.
 
my only query is the radio triggers any good?
 
Yes. I used their predecesors for 2 years before trading up to Skyports.
I still have my old GI triggers and use them alongside my skyports when I want to trigger a lot of lights!!

The new versions of the triggers that Flash sells are even better.
