Location for portrait photography near Edinburgh

Right, so I'm looking for a location in the Edinburgh area to conduct a portrait session with a family who are over here on holiday. They want a setting that is typically Scottish and have particularly mention ruined castles and abbeys.

As we'll be doing it in the evening the castles and abbeys that I know of are closed. Does anyone know of somewhere in a nice location that we would be able to visit for free?

I have suggested Arthurs seat which would be handy for me but it does lack the ruins.

I've not lived in Edinburgh long and am yet to get to know the area properly so advise from those who have been here longer would be appreciated!

Hailes Castle nr East Linton is free entry and a ruin but offers some good opportunities for a shoot as it's fairly quiet and out of the way. Not too far from Edinburgh if memory as I recall...
