Local paper use my picture !

Oh and all my pictures are available for free as I made a conscious decision to never ever make any money out of this hobby!

That'll be because it's your HOBBY...lol

I have to sysmpathise with some of the comments here - when it's your only source of income, things tend to look a bit different.

To those who say I'm taking their bread & butter, I say when you give some one a lift in your car think of the poor taxi drivers you are depriving of work. I think not.

Actually, I would liken it more to people who enjoy driving their cars going round the taxi pickup spots and offering the people there a free lift.

Or those who fix there friends PC's for a pint of beer? or help a mate change the oil in his car? or cut an elderly neighbours lawn?

The list of jobs people do for free that could potentially been seen as taking money off professionals is endless and moaning about it will achieve nothing. The geenie is out of the bottle and you can't put it back, the business is changing and I wish people would just accept it and move on. The market sets the value and the current market value for several forms of photograph is currently zero so there is no business opertunity.

I have a feeling that the Nottingham chip wrapper didn't choose not to pay a pro for their picture of a burning house just because gus607 sent his in. It simply illustrated a story that would not have had one otherwise.

I have more of an issue with (say) the BBC asking people to send pictures in and then using them to create a story about the snow (or whatever)

But if I were around and could get a decent image when some celeb falls over drunk there is not a chance I would not try to profit from the pictures just to let some 'pro' earn a crust.

i work for a paper, who employs 6 full time togs, local rags need this sort of thing every week because it sells papers. so it keeps a lot more people in jobs than 1 photographer who might not be able to sell a picture

just as a side note i don't think our paper will pay for photos , the same way they wont pay for a story (unless its a major one)

times are hard for newspapers, so shelling out for freelance togs isnt an option

A newspaper isn't exactly a mate is it? And fixing a PC for a couple of beers you are actually being paid for it aren't you?

Doesn't make a massive amount of difference to me, I don't sell pictures to papers, but I can sympathise with those whose livelihood is affected and can see why they find it frustrating.

I fix my mates cars for a couple of beers
I do PC repairs for friends, family and work colleagues
I give my mates photographs of their motors from track days
I give friends & family photographs of their dogs
I do photoshoots for mates for free.

I really don't give two hoots if the above is depriving a professional of the work - it is my choice to do this and no-one can tell me I do not have the right to make that choice.

I don't give stuff to the papers because if they are going to make money using my photo I want to make money too. But it is the photographers right to do whatever they wish, and if that means giving the papers images for free then so be it.

We see so many people banging the drum about photographers rights to take the photo - but occasionally I see the same people effectively trying to restrict the rights of people who wish to give their photos away.

I have to laugh at these threads... Poster posts, bitchers bitch, poster throws a wobbly and leaves the forum....

Life goes on... The internet continues to turn... Is there a point?

I have to laugh at these threads...

I ahve myself a little bet... how many posts before the old "did you get paid" one that you know will come... I got it right once

All this seems crazy to me. The pic was used on a website and its unlikely a photographer would of been sent and caught the image anyway. If a paid pro cant produce better images than an amatuer doing it as a hobby then they shouldnt be getting paid in the first place IMHO
So people just seem to want to winge and now the guys left the forum, insane.

Sort of on topic....

I done our local rugby teams official team/head shots on Saturday. Normally me (Club tog) and 2 local rags turn up. Normally 930 before training at 10am but told this year it will be at 9am. I didnt think it would go ahead on time but got there anyway as did our "freebie paper" staff tog. The main local rag photographer turned up at 920am just as the lads were leaving the dressing rooms............In their training gear, He missed the lot. We had it done for 10 past 9 !!!!

Sounds about right...as long as you ask the 'going rate', no-one would take issue with that...
As you say it's the proliferation of free imagery that's driving prices down that's the bigger problem...

these threads are all the same, look I got a pic printed

*******

end of thread :D
