I used to, I'm ashamed to say, work for the media. Often when they won't give details it means that it's an anonymous tip, or one of their co-workers have found it.

Scott, no matter how nice something is, the press can easily put a negative spin on something, I've seen it happen many times.

I didn't work in journalism but in another dept that is equally as bad IMHO. I have to be frank, I despise the media and for a very good reason too (which I won't discuss on a public forum). A few people on the forum do know why though.

If they're going to run the story there's not much that you can do to stop them, if they're that interested. If they put a certain positive spin on it, it won't go without an interview. If they put one of the other possible spins on it, it can run without the interview.

Since wheels has a rapport with the journalist, it could help him get what he wants (ie, no publicity) it depends on what she's really like.

I personally hope that it doesn't hit the papers, because of Wheels' wishes and because of the potentiol harm that it could do to the forum, - Wheels is a genuine case and it was a members idea to start the collection - wheels even objected at first and was pursuaded to let TP members have a collection for him, but the media attracts cases that aren't genuine to cry a sob story soley for personal gains.

I for one didn't donate for publicity. I donated to help someone seriously down on his luck. The only repayment I want is for you to get out and have a good time taking photos.

I really hope I do thanks Mike:thumbs:

Well lets just hope that the local paper respects Julian's wishes, I wouldn't hold out much hope for a national rag, but a local may be more sympathetic and run a v.short story, if they feel they must, simply saying that someone has been been done a favour by friends.
Julian no one on here thinks you've ungateful, so that can be put right of mind; if you put it to a poll 100% would say they have been grateful to you for allowing them to share in this project. Everyone hopes that the new kit will help you deal a little better with the cards that you have been dealt recently.

Rob & Darren and the hundreds of you that chipped in on here are all the true heros, I wish I was strong enough to repay you all with the publicity, I can only apologise for not having the cahooners to do it.

To echo others, I never contributed with any thoughts of publicity it may bring. I contributed unconditionally so that you may continue with the great progress you have made in rebuilding your life and the enjoyment that you have found in photography.
Jokes aside about our demands for photos, you owe us nothing mate we don't need repaying.
Chin up Julian, good to see you are logging off and getting some rest. The last any of us would want would be for this to make you ill. Your health and welfare are just as important to us as your photography.

:agree:

me too

Local press LOVE good news stories - it's what sells local papers. Why would they put a negative 'spin' on a good news story - sorry - I think that's rubbish. Whether you hate the media or not I bet you watch TV news and probably buy newspapers too. If the local publishes 'a v.short story' then that will be picked up by a national - and so it goes on. Too late to put the brakes on I'm afraid. I hope the press are sympathetic to Julian but I doubt that will stop them publishing what is, for once, a great good news story.

Whether Julian or anyone else wants this to be public or not - it's a bit late for that - it's been on a public forum for days!

And no! - it wasn't me! As I said earlier - without any help from anyone here - this was bound to be picked up.

To be honest I'm not sure debating the positive / negative spin thing is going to make Julian feel any better about this phone call.

Julian - just keep saying no if anyone else calls, it's all you can do and I think the vast majority here get why you are not up for any fuss so don't worry about appearing ungrateful because you don't.

I happen to work for the media too ;)

No-one needs an interview - there are quotes by the hundred on this forum!

I'm aware of that - doesn't stop Julian making his feelings clear if contacted.

WHEELS - I understand it is difficult for you, but don't let this dishearten you. You will soon be back up and photographing. THAT was the aim of the whip-round, nothing else.

I expect NOTHING of or from you. I hope nobody else does either. The paper will die down, don't worry about it. people do think newspapers are all powerful - the Nationals used to be, but local newspapers are tomorrow's fish papers.

Just get on with your life enjoying your camera when it arrives and I hope you derive many hours of pleasure from it. Thats all.

Maybe, your contacts at the paper can give you some jobs to do WITH the camera! Now THAT would be a story worth hearing! Good luck and keep your spirits up.

I'm sure I ticked the no publicity box on my donation too ;) Don't let it worry you mate, just ignore it. No point getting worked up over it.
Take care

Honestly? No, I don't, I don't watch the news, I cringe at the sight of a newspaper...if there's something that someone things I need to know someone will tell me, I don't seek any "news" anymore.

To be frank though, I think that the rapport that Jules has with the journalist will work in his favour. They most likely realise that they could try to get a story twice as good once he's shooting again - especially for the charity. Or that they'll miss out on future stories with Julian if they go against his wishes now.

Just my opinion.

The media don't matter, what matters is that Julian gets to enjoy his new toys that so many have generously contributed towards.

Just a wonder, with all you guys stating you should name and shame etc, the person who may have emailed the local newspaper (I'll state now, it wasn't me) might not have seen Julian asking to not be included in the media, there wasn't a 30 page thread remember, there was around 1,500 posts in the whole thread.

The meaning of this persons call to the Media was probably a goodwill one to show how kind a community this is?

I was too late to join the party on this one, but I've read through Julian's thread and it actually brought a tear to my eye.
A HUGE well done to everyone who contributed - and even though I was too late, it genuinely makes me proud to be a member of the community here.

I just hope that all this newspaper nonsense doesn't put a dampener on everyone's efforts and end up causing any grief for Julian and his family.

Rob & Darren and the hundreds of you that chipped in on here are all the true heros, I wish I was strong enough to repay you all with the publicity, I can only apologise for not having the cahooners to do it.

And to you Julian, Stop that nonsense right now :nono: :nono: :nono:
I bet not one person who contributed did so with the thought of wanting any sort of repayment or publicity for it.
They did it for the same reason I would have contributed if I'd seen it earlier - out of a genuine desire to help out a fellow togger who's had more than his share of bad luck.

We're only talking about a local paper here, not one of the nationals. Stick to your guns in saying no and hopefully they'll accept that as an answer.
Honestly, without you agreeing to photographs and an interview I don't think they'll have much of a story anyway.

Please don't let this tarnish the wonderful thing that happened here over the weekend. Accept the gift in the spirit that it was intended and enjoy it.

well said  now why cant I put my thoughts into words like that

I

We're only talking about a local paper here, not one of the nationals.

And where do you think the nationals get a lot of their stories from - yep you guessed - local papers!!

find out who it was for one seeing as Julian did not want any publicity at all, but knowing newspapers this will be publicised asap against his wishes

There's no right to privacy, but the journo has a right to protect sources.

Julian has declined to comment to the press, which he has a right to do, but that will not prevent them publishing if they wish, as long as they're accurate, if they're not, PCC time. Journo may well simply have been checking their facts first.

This is a public section of the site.

The newspaper may, possibly, have a photographer(s) working for / with them that frequent the site who may have mentioned it in passing to a colleague and they've done the rest.

Could have been someone who got the info secondhand, a forum member discussing it in the pub, chatting to partner, work colleagues etc. It wasn't a secret!

Just because the journo said they got an "e-mail" doesn't mean anything. I hear of people claiming to hear messages from God all the time, and I don't believe them either. "err, I got an e-mail" is an easy fob off.

It's good news, something that we need to hear more of.

If it runs, let it run, decline to comment and refer them to the forum.

I agree! ... I still don't get why wheels would have a problem with the publicity? It's a cracking story of human kindness and goodwill :) I wouldn't be surprised if the nationals ran with the story too ..

Depression/stress for one, (its got massive beyond everyones thought and very over whelming) it is a good story, but Julian doesnt want any publicity end of, and neither does anyone else, to respect his wishes he didnt ask for any of this

Julian doesn't have to give a reason as to why he doesn't want the publicity, although he has given some insight as to why in this thread if you care to read through it carefully.

Julian doesn't want publicity and that should be it, end of - Yes it may be a "cracking story of human kindness" but we shouldn't be questioning his reasons as to why he does not want the publicity, to do so in my view is insensitive

I can't believe we're still going on about this. There is NO want for publicity. End of. I think this thread should be closed, and Julian's wishes should be respected regardless of how good a 'story' it would make.
