Typical can't get Meridian so don't know if it was used :bang:

why does it have to be about money?

My hobby is doing what ever you do as a paid job, will you please inform your employer that I'm willing to replace you for free. ;)

I agree, Why does it have to be about money. At least they've called to ask, and they'll obviously credit the op.

It's a really great photo, I like it :) I have to admit when I saw the article on the BBC website I'd wondered if anyone would capture a good picture... :S

Dont give you pics away to the press for free then....

Provided you and all other professional photographers never fix anyone's pc problem for free (or get yours/theirs fixed for free), mmm, check out some of the other forums on this site, same goes for any other 'trade', plumber/mechanic/builder/joiner/electrician/author etc.

Congrats to the op on getting your image published

Thanks for the congrats gentlemen :) But it did not stop there I had two further e-mails from local papers asking if they could use that picture as well, to which I said yes, they both confirmed that I would be given credit for it's use as did ITV Meridian.
I have to say I never gave any thought to ask for payment for it's usage I was just really happy (well quite chuffed really) that I had produced something that the news media thought was (a lovely picture) their words:cool: that could be used and seen by joe public. I would also have to say the only reason that they found this picture was that I had tweeted it not thinking that it would have had the reaction that it did, it's a good job I didn't tell them that I had taken quite a few others.
Scottish Mike I'm glad you like it, thanks:)
You know it's quite funny really because the journalist tog didn't turn up until the flames had been put out, so could you say I took food from his table:shrug:

This is killing a living for a lot of us. Are you ready to have yours eaten away?
This is a problem that means you're either going to adapt creatively, change profession or sink. As photography (and good photography) becomes easier and more accessible the playing field for pros is going to change significantly. That's not a judgement call on what's right or wrong. It's just the tide.
Think about what happened with film manufacturers with the digital revolution. Would it have been sensible for them to bleat "No! You'll ruin our living!" against the tide of digital?

This is killing a living for a lot of us. Are you ready to have yours eaten away?

Then if you could please stop dealing with any company that has off shored it's IT as it is killing a living for thousands? Don't worry while I wait for you and everyone else's actions to force the genie back in the bottle I'll try a little bit of adapting to the market conditions in bettween crying for the lost golden years.

Lame old argument. You just need to adapt.

Many many industries, including mine, are awash with 'amateurs' having a go. Every b****r in the world can knock up a quick access database or excel spreadsheet to solve a problem now a days and many of them do. Who needs professional software developers now? Well - if those same 'professional' developers knock out the same access databases or excel spreadsheets, then no-one, and quite right too!

Evolve or become obsolete - it's always been the same, and it always will.

Congratulations to the OP - cracking shot and it's nice to get recognition in the form of others wanting to use the pic. :-)

Congrats mate.

I'm surprised they contacted you. This pic was all over the Internet, it's amazing they found out who took it lol.
I was going to pop over to grab some shots (we saw the glow) but guessed it would be packed with people snapping away.
I wonder what hours the local press togs work??
Dean.

Thanks Dean, yes I was surprised 05:21,:bonk: The problem was not the amount of people that were there but it was where you would have parked you'r car, the Hight St was packed.
No idea what hours they work I assume they get a phone call:shrug:
The papers came out today I have to say I was quite exited, I made a front page, a page 3 and also found out they did use it on TV it's also on their web site.

Good God, the OP takes a great shot and has the sheer audacity to let people use it for free instead of charging them?!! How very dare he??!!:eek:
Frank, for that heinous crime you've earned yourself a first class ticket on the express train to hell!

Just like the word processor killed the typing pool. If you have added value to sell, sell it. If you, as a pro and like the press togs who couldn't get there, don't, you can't expect the rest of us to artificially prop your market up.

Congrats OP!

good shot and well done.
as they say early bird juicy worms.

That looks like a serious residential fire - I hope nobody was hurt.

As for your image being requested - if you're happy to oblige then everybody is happy so well done.

I get the whole 'pro' thing and it's been done to death but that's life.
