As the nights are getting daker i have been doing a lot of long exposure photography with a mate who uses a Canon 400D.

My mates raw images load instantly most of the time where mine usually takes longer to load than the actual exposure taken meaning my mate takes 3 shots for every 1 shot that i take.

I am using a mixture of class 6 and 10 SD cards ranging from 4-8gb and a ML-L3 remote.

My mates using compact flash and a wired shutter release.

Is there anything I can do to speed this up as its getting rather annoying now. Is it something in the settings of the camera or is it just a slow camera?

Cheers in advance,
Matt.

Your long exposure noise reduction is turned on. Basically everytime you take a shot the camera will take another dark image to work out which pixels are noisy on your first image. Since you're shooting raw, I'd be inclined to turn it off (shooting menu I think) and your pics will process instantly.

You dont mention what camera you are using ask your mate if he has noise reduction enable/disabled in his camera menu settings. When I first did any long exposures the image would take upto 40 secs to process in camera, I disabled the noise reduction in the menu settings and they appear almost instantly, I was using a 40D at the time, so check your menu

The clue to what camera I'm using was in the title. :D

Many thanks, I thought it would be something simple that I've overlooked and that makes sense.

I'll give it a try tonight.

Thanks again,
Matt

He's using a D5000.

As both the answers above, turn off your noise reduction.
