Okay,

Call me daft...

But is this the most useless cause for a concert ever?

Harping on about carbon emissions, cutting down, turning things off, not leaving things on standby............

Jetting all of these performers in from around the world, people travelling to the concerts from all over the country(ies), everyone watching said concert on TV rather than switching their TV off and saving carbon emissions, all the energy used in the lights, speakers, broadcasting........

Instead of asking people to feed Africa in Live Aid/8 if these performers gave up some of their own personal fortunes of millions to the people who were starving rather than asking the people with less than them to give that'd make a bigger impact.

Raising awareness of carbon emissions by staging multiple carbon guzzling concerts worldwide, is that the definition of irony?....

I think so

 they are using low enery lights in the stadium mate...:naughty:

I forgot this was on.
Someone needs to tell them about the milankovitch cycle
I am sick of having this carp rammed down our throats

Good quote from someone on the bbc website

A true Live Earth concert would have been purely acoustic, with the artists performing in little pubs near where they live

You've more bottle than I Matt :D

[sits back in chair]

A good debate never hurt anyone Chris ;)

I could do with some intellectual sparring anyways, lets get to it.

Keep it clean, keep it non-personal, keep it civil :)

Oh No Matt, I'm on your side just to scared to admit it :D

Have to agree the aim is to reduce carbon footprints well if they hadnt done all these concerts then we would have all been able to carry on a bit longer using normal light bulbs (we do have a couple of low engery bulbs in places we have on a lot) so what are all these celbs doing apart from flying round the world?? what are you all going to do?

and we have had these bulbs for a while now, not just cos of Al Gore.

What on earth is that bloke with the beard doing with that guitar??

He's certainly not playing it.

So is ANYONE doing anything????

going to turn off the pc and save the planet....

:suspect: na surley i wont make a difference or is that what everyone says....

It might take a couple of pence off your leccy bill, but as far as global warming goes - the volcanoes are pumping out a fair bit more Co2 than us puny humans.

I think the statistics were either 1% or 10% when compared to volcanoes and I think it was the former.

However as individuals I dont think we can do much about volcanoes however we could switch things off at the wall instead of hitting the stand by button, would save us all some money if nothing else.
Do you need to have two lights on?
do you need to have the heating on could you not put a jumper on?

(playing devils advocate here).

im all for saving the planet me .. i only go abroad when i can afford it " since taking up photography not very often"
so its off to blighty for the next 10 years

if we are contributing to global warming, what did all the mill owners contribute during the, 20's, 30's, 40's, 50's and 60's, not taking in to account the victorian years.

I think it's about 11000 years since the end of the last Ice Age. I wonder what they blamed that on? A build up of mammoth farting perhaps? :D

:suspect:
two lights on at one time you must be upper class

As Ken Bruce, I think it was sasid recently " The wife has dramatically reduced my Carbon foot print, she makes me take off my boots at the back door when I have been in the coal shed filling the scuttle" :D

The last time there was sevre "global warming" one way or other, the dinosaurs died out and look what happened in the way of evolution, what happens when these "dinosaurs" die out what will rule the earth then? "They" reckon that cockroaches are about the only thing to survive a nuclear war. Its all heat related, global warning or nuclear explosion. I guess the insects will be the next "superiour species"

Now thats frightening enough to make you think :D

Who cares! The Pussycat Dolls looked great to me!

Couple of good acts too - the Foo Fighters were great, and so (somewhat surprisingly) was Madonna!

As Wossy said - the original MILF!

im sat in the front room on the pc with the lights on half " dimmer switch"

I've often thought about this - Just because you decide to take holidays in this country, does that mean that one less plane will fly out to Spain/America/wherever over the next god knows how many years it'll take to balance it out.

You'll never get people wanting to give up their summer hols - if the weather continues to deteriorate then more people will want to jet off to warmer climates thus contributing to the problem.

Theres lots of interesting stuff on the net about it - with arguments for each side, personally I'm very sceptical about it. I think we're experiencing natural shifts in the Earth's climate and it'll reset itself, even if that means wiping out most of the human population. We're overdue an ice age.

They show you polar ice caps melting, what they don't tell you is that the ice is actually growing and getting thicker in a lot of the places.

whats worse lights on
or
burning a candle:shrug:

Well if we have done damage then it only makes sense that we promote change. Gotta spend energy to save energy so if it promotes and makes people away of the issues then its all for a good cause. Of course, if like some people say we've done nothing to affect the environment then why all the bitching about this? Good concert I thought. Madonna and Gogo Bordello \o/

The frightening thing is how short a time it takes to go into an ice age once it starts

Its great really, You get the " the next ice age is just around the corner" brigade one week on the radio
The next week its the "global warming " brigade
I am still waiting for the chicken little brigade to make an apperance, Oh wait a minute thats what both "parties" are saying they just can't agree on which method of our demise will arrive first, There is of course the very large space rocks that are just floating around in space just waiting to hit us and destroy life on earth as we know it. I wonder why so many people myself included do not take these people seriously.
Ok I might be wrong but it seems that global warming ( if it exists) will kill us all a lot slower than anything else that mother nature decieded to hurl at us in temper for screwing up the planet one way or other

I was at school in the 60's and "They" were forever telling us we were entering a new ice age.....just 'cos we'd had a few bad winters in the late 50's! Yet geologists tell us that the weather is cyclical.....some millenia hotter/cooler than others, so isn't all this, just part of these cycles?

Humans have only been around for a short time really, yet these weather cycles have been going on for eons. Yes, we might have had a slightly detrimental effect over the last 100 yrs in particular (felling forests and polluting the air for a start), but we can probably solve these issues with a bit of careful effort. Lets just try to keep things in perspective and not get hysterical. And whilst we are about it,...........did you see those lovely Orangutans the other night, on TV....got to save them! ;)

Seriously Ice age is coming, you heard it here first :p

You won't be able to get in touch with me once it hits though to let me know I was right - cos we'll have lost all communications and we'll be holed up inside some old museums under 300ft of snow.

Or was that a film? I get confused sometimes ;)

I believe them. I think it's 2017 were all doomed :)

You can really get obsessed about this stuff. The Moon is moving away from the Earth a little each year. As the planet is less influenced by it's gravitational pull, the tides will cease, the Earth will tip on its axis, The North Pole will be where people go for their holidays. :D

No amount of legislation will stop that happening, or this planet eventually becoming a Red Dwarf, but personally, I'm not gonna worry too much about it.
