I have a 500d and when using the manual settings where you can adjust shutter speed etc.

When I go to take a photo on any manual mode with any lens, I press the shutter button and the view finder with go completely black and sound like its tried to take a photo. No image will appear on the screen and I have to press the shutter button again to get a photo.

It's not the auto focus etc as I have to press the shutter button completely twice.

The auto modes are fine, just the manual modes that are effected :(

Can anyone help please?

Thanks

Dan

Easiest way is to take a photo in auto mode then on a computer see what settings the camera used. Try and repeat those settings in manual mode. Also have a look on youtube to see how to use your camera would be the way I would advise

Are you in mirror-up mode? - when you set the dial to M it will remember your last settings used in M mode and reinstate them.

Yup, definitely sounds like you're in mirror lock up mode. The first press locks it, the second takes the picture.

Yeah mirror lock up, you can disable it in the custom function menu.
First noise you hear is the mirror locking up, hence why you can no longer see through the viewfinder and then the second is the shutter. Its good for slower shutter speeds as theres no vibration from the mirror slap.

I rarely look past the front page to find current threads. It's unusual for threads to remain unanswered by the time they drop off the bottom. In the busier areas, I sometimes glance down page two to see if there are any unanswered threads or ones that have few replies.

This one had been.
