smitfraud-c.toolbar888
All the on line help points towards SmitFraudFix**.zip****
(stars added to break the link)

Spybot recognises it but won't shift it either
Any suggestions?

I'd download and run HiJackthis. If you don't understand the log file it produces then copy and paste it to one of the spyware help forums.

Just google hijackthis for plenty of info and the download. It does not fix anything (I think... not used it for ages) but lists all the hidden stuff happening on your computer.

Cheers Robert.
I will have to try that, in case I am missing something

can you remove the drive and put it in another machine to remove the virus?

cheers Brummie found that one and tried all the suggestions :'(

Cheers again but I am trying to avoid that until the very last minute :'(

Well I finally killed the little b****r by running spybot / superantispyware & AVG
alternately then deleting the quarrentine items and re-booting after each clean out. each one seemed to take out a portion I only have a basic knowledge and was advised to do the above worked for me!
Norton can go screw itself!
That was running an upto date version when the $hit hit the fan! the little pop up to say that Norton had prevented an attack of / from "so & so"
was up and down like a tarts knickers before I had a chance to disconnect!
The Customer support at norton was really helpful. Norton showed "no infection and they thought that there was no problem when I finally got through to the thick skulled advisor that my PC was infected whilst an upto date version of there internet security was running she said "Oh you have a virus then thats not my department!
