Lionesses

I heard the news.......well done to them.

Indeed, well done them. I'd normally ignore football, but this is quite an achievement.

I hate football, but this might inspire me to watch the final, Well done ladies (y)

Why does a footie thread always inspire people to express their dislike of it?

Good luck to the ladies, hope it goes well on Sunday.

They are doing a great job. Keepy uppies! Back of the net!

GG to them, we [Ireland] dropped out in the first round [nothing new there then!] Though we did at least give the Ozzies a decent first game [coulda, shoulda nabbed it!]

What a fantastic game. Better than most men's games I watch.. They could teach the guys a thing or two. Only one shot on goal was skyed..as they say. The ball went into row Z. All other attempts were kept low and on target. Only one watch of the men's game will show many shots going well over the crossbar. I heard that the penalty taken by Chloe Kelly against Nigeria during the quarter final went in at 69 mph A record in this tournament. According to data from the official match ball, the shot on Monday reached 110.79km/h (69mph) – a speed that beats the most powerful strike of the 2022-23 Premier League campaign, by West Ham’s Saïd Benrahma, that was recorded at 107.2km/h (66.6mph).

I have no idea how well Spain plays. Obviously, very well as they are England's opponents on Sunday. Lauren James will be back after a three match ban was reduced ,on appeal, to two, for a red card offence ...stamping on an opponent's bum.

Why won't Nike reproduce goalkeeper Mary Earps shirt ? Very strange. There was also a row about bonuses put to one side . It's about time they were on a level playing field..no pun intended..with the men.

For anyone interested. The bonus issue https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/england-women-pay-world-cup-bonus-b2377380.html

The big difference is the management, and the lack of ego's. Every squad member knows they have a role to play, even if it means only getting 5 minutes in the whole tournament. They really do seem to have the "all for one & one for all" spirit.

They looked good out there today, very resilient. Let's hope they do well in the final.

Sadly, I have seen the data about ball speed elsewhere and it is way out. Yes, I am pleased about the win yesterday, but anyone who thinks a woman can kick a football harder/faster than a man is on stuff that is way beyond recreational drugs. maybe there are women who can run faster than Usain Bolt? Maybe there are women who can punch harder than Tyson Fury?
David Beckham has hit a ball at 98mph. The record is Ronnie Heberson at 130mph.

not much of a football fan myself but glad to see them doing well, there seems to be a dogma in the UK of a lot of womans sports having a low interest and not much money thrown at it.
i suspect with football the clubs simply dont want to start splitting major pitch time with woman and reducing the amount of man content

Quite a fan of the women's game. Obviously slower than the men but that seems to add to the skill requirement. Nice to see players on their feet longer and not as much time rolling around on the floor. There seems to be a lot more respect for opponents as well, the other day I saw one England player say sorry because she bump into an opponent in the tunnel. Having said all this I'm still an avid United fan of 60years standing.

I'm not a football fan at all.
But I must admit that this did tickle me.
Even if it maybe a bit premature.

I think what they said was "It was confirmed that Chloe Kelly's penalty against Nigeria in the last 16, was more powerful than any goal scored in the Premier League last season."

Just waiting for the failed male footballers to declare they identify as women to ruin another sport for them.

  • Haha
Reactions: Nod

Nice thought, but it's never happening. A team of 15yr old boy's beat the Australian national women's team 7-0 in a friendly in 2016, you can only imagine what the Senior men's team would do

When did the women's game go properly professional though? The ladies' game has come on in leaps and bounds in a few short years.

Again, that is absolute twaddle, you only have to look at goal of the month to see far harder shots than that.

The US World Cup winners also lost against a college team years ago. A 14 year old boy has run a faster time than the women's 100m World record holder FloJo.

I don't like Soccur 'I dont even know how to spell it .It is a game for young boys and old men ,too much pretending to be hurt. Either of the Rugby codes are my preference.

That's a bit like saying 'I prefer Tennis to Badminton' completely different sports/disciplines. And I say that coming from the country with the No.1 , top team in the world for rugby :D I also like boxing AND MMA and never find myself comparing the two. With football [soccer] you go in knowing how it is, either like or loathe, you do not have to be involved. It will go on without you

How do the measure that,?

Don't think anyone asked you whether you liked it or not

I don't like Garlic, but that is equally irrelevant on a thread congratulating our ladies football team

Aye, considering they can't even spell the word you would wonder why they even bothered posting in here

In the light of what you've said I had a look online and most articles just state what I'd heard so I kept digging and found this 'FactCheck" article. It does acknowledge the reports as I stated .The speed of the ball was only compared to those in the 2022/23 Premire League season so I assume someone originally just Googled 'Highest ball speed goal Premiere League 2022/23" and came up with West Ham’s Saïd Benrahma. Just a one off. I don't think anyone was suggesting that women can,on a regular basis, record ball speeds higher than their male counterparts over the years.

My bold:

Along with keeping the ball low..ie not 'leaning backwards' which sends it into row Z it's the aspects you've highlighted that I also like to see. No going down as though they'd been poleaxed was the most obvious. Not going nose to nose in confrontation with an opponent .Another was that, for the most part, the decisions by the ref were not challenged, certainly the refs weren't mobbed as you see week in and week out in the Premiere League. The FA need to clamp down on that ,it's intimidating for the ref. Only the captains should be allowed to approach the ref. I think that's the position in Rugby League .Time and time again we see a ref running backwards to get away from 'the mob'

You also mentioned respect for other players..apart from Lauren James's stamp on Michelle Alozie's bum in the Nigeria game, they do, as you say, more respect and behave properly towards opponents. After the penalty shoot-out in the quarter-finals against Nigeria, in which Chloe Kelly scored the winning goal, the Nigerian goalkeeper, after her attempt at saving the penalty, remained on her knees ....crying. She'd made several excellent saves during the game. The first thing you would expect a player to do when scoring a winning penalty like that is to run to their team mates in celebration but after she scored Chloe Kelly went to console the keeper and was joined by a couple of her team mates. She even gestured/ told a cameraman to move away from the keeper.

Ps. As a Man United fan you may wish to contribute to my next post in HT.

From the matches I have seen ( which is not that many at all ) of this competition. There has only been small amount of diving, unlike mens football, where the stadium might as well flood the pitch as there is some much diving going on we can ask the local swimming clubs to join in the game ! !

Because of the diving I have stopped watching domestic football, and occasionally watch finals if I am in the mood.
I prefer the woman's games as they seem to actually want to be there, and play tge game.

I would like video enquiries after the game on diving and players being fined ( which should go to charities ) very large sums, plus 3 match bans !
The players could not give a monkey about the fine, however match bans hurts them alot !

They can, and often do, get a yellow card for diving and on Radio Five-Live 6-0-6 phone-in after Saturday's football, Robbie Savage and Chris Sutton, the hosts, nominate players for 'The Simulation Game" .ie diving..and play a clip from the song 'Free Fallin' by Tom Petty. They also play the commentary from mid-week games where a player has dived.

Yes well what does a yellow card mean, they still play on. A yellow card in either Rugby codes and you are off . The diving aspect of soccor puts me off . I have suggested to some that it is better to tune into the game at the end as it is most likely to be a scoreless draw .

Unfortunately, today's game wasn't the best(. But I'm really proud of the team; they proved that they are one of the best, they are strong and ready to fight.
I wish them all the best and I hope next time they will win

Keir Starmer calls for the Lionesses to be honoured. I assume he means a BEM..the lowest ranked. He also called for a Bank Holiday if they win.

Pure political opportunism.

I agree, from a man who doesn't even know what a woman is.

They got a medal didn’t they? Silver for first place loser, the World Cup is over, put it back in the box till the next one.
