Linux / Windows Hosting

They are different operating systems and some can run programs that the other one cannot.

I would suggest a Linux server, as all the programs you need are nearly always free and there are thousands of online guides for setting up a Linux web server.
 
I would go with Linux, usually the cheaper option. You only really need windows if your using asp.
 
Yep linux as well, most providors host exclusively on linux anyway and unless you need something that runs specifically on a windows server (and you will know if you do) linux is better.
 
TSOhost customer here and running on a linux server. Unless you have some specfic software that needs a windows backend then choose the linux server.

Over half the internet runs on Linux based server, so you won't be on your own and the customer support from the guys at TSOhost is second to none.

depends what technology you are programming your site in

If it is ASP / ASP.NET use windows
If it is PHP / SQL use linux

You can install PHP and mySql on a windows box etc.. but it really isnt worth the pain. As mentioned before. In terms of server software, Linux has many great free options
 
heh, i go against the norm : i got a windows server hosting php stuff :P

takes me about a tenth of the time to config a windows server than a *nix one.
 
It is said (and I believe it!) that Linux hosting is more reliable and more secure than Windows. I have always used Linux hosting and never had any trouble.

I dont think he will be configuring the server via ssh, so commands wont really interest him.

And please not for other users that those commands will only work on a debian based server :)
 
To step back a bit, what type of website are you looking to create and who will be the userbase?

Once we know, its easier to figure what the backhaul should be ;)
 
The site will be a simple website with photo galleries from recent motorsport events that i have covered.

I not 100 percent but i think my last website was windows hosting!
 
I will be using KonpoZer to build the site and the galleries will be done with JAlbum.
 
I have used WINDOWS SERVER for about 7 years, love it. Whilst many will disagree, it's actually very stable, fast and does the job perfectly. I love that I can log onto the Windows Desktop remotely, and take care of things in an environment I am used to.

Perfomance is not an issue either. I get 200k unique visits a day, every day, mostly during business hours - every visit is database logged, and is powered by .NET. It can sometimes be literally hundreds of visits all running at the same time, everything is nice and zippy, site is responsive and uptime has not failed yet.

I currently use RACKSPACE who offer industry leading support, but you would get away with a much cheaper option if your site was quieter. I also run PHP sites on Windows, with MySQL alongside.

same here - never had a problem using Windows servers for webhosting :] people are too quick to discount it.
 
Now i cant decide, im sorting it out tomorrow so i need to decide by then!
 
If you are looking at Gallery2/php/mysql or wordpress etc, it is a breeze to setup on unix. Windows is a little more complex but not impossible. I've run my sites on Windows and Linux over the years and both have pros and cons. I'm currently on Linux because it is just so easy to setup for the software I'm using. And its free! But I fear that if it breaks, I won't know what to do to fix it because really I'm a Windows guy. But thats why I have backups and a spare server. Of course if you buy hosted space, thats not your concern.
