I was wondering what operating system would work best with an old Intel Atom 330 1.6Ghz processor that I have.
I have run Ubuntu 12.04LTS for some time and was generally satisfied with performance as a music server.
Then along came Ubuntu 14.04 with its fancy interface, floating menus, transparent screens and my machine just died the death and couldn't keep up with the graphic demands placed on it (I'm
just using on-board graphics since it's just a server after all).
I tried Lubuntu 13.10 which was better but not snappy enough for me but at least it allowed Ubuntu 2d interface which mainstream has banned.
Finally last night I put up Linux Lite 2.0 and it works very well with the sluggish Atom processor.
Linux Lite feels good, written by enthusiasts who just want it to work speedily and efficiently. I added Logitech media server and my music server was singing again.
It seems to handle networks well and may be a candidate for XMBC when I get around to it.
So go on, give it a try if you have an old netbook languishing somewhere unloved, you might just give it another lease of life!

I'm running 14.04 LTS on my 1.66GHz Atom (I may be running it on both, I can't remember). Together with xbmc it is fine. I have 2G of memory which will be the issue if it is running incredibly slowly. You shouldn't boot the UI if you don't want it running as a desktop... (or install LXDE or something else designed for low memory systems instead).

I'm writing this using an old Philips/Twinhead H12Y laptop with a 1.6GHz dual core pentium and 2GB of RAM running LLOS 2. It's not snappy (the earlier version was more responsive, and usable with just 1GB) but it works acceptably and will play back DVDs OK on an external monitor. Our son will take this laptop with him when he goes to work in France over the winter.

I've been using CrunchBang quite happily on my Netbook for a while. Uses OpenBox as a window manager.
