I've currently got a fairly heavy tripod I use mainly indoors but from the few times I have used it I get much much sharper shots!

Just wondering if there's any recommendation for a lightweight one that perhaps goes down to a fairly small size for transportation?

Depends if you want a full size one or short one. I got a small aluminium tripod for travel which suited me and my budget at the time, but if you want a full size one light weight usually equates to poor quality unless you opt for carbon fibre which can be pricey.

Bought a Velbon Luxi-L II a few months ago, and has been great for travelling with. Huge height range, very quick to put up and collapse, holds my EOS 60D and f2.8 70-200 without any wobble using the ballhead it came with - might change that in the future, but it's been good enough so far. Can stick in the side of my Lowepro flipside, weighs about a kilo.

I just did this... It really does depend on your budget.....

My Thread here

All the ones I talk about fold the legs back over the head for a smaller footprint

Good luck

Recently bought a Benro Travel Angel 2 (£120 on t'internet) and am a big fan. It comes with a ball head; one leg can be removed and connected to the ball head to make a monopod. It folds up really small by reversing the legs and is MUCH lighter than the Manfrotto I had before.

Used it in anger on the top of Snowdon a couple of weeks ago and it was extremely stable even with the legs fully extended.

Hope that helps :)

I've just bought a Benro C2692TB1 from Hong Kong via eBay. First impressions are excellent, seems like a very sturdy tripod ( my heaviest setup is a D7000 with 24-70 ~2kg).

It folds up to 16" and weighs 1.75kg including the ball head. Payed £225 for it and £22 import duty.

I looked at that as well, a decent bit of kit tbh....

My setup holds 8kg and weighs 1.375kg

Cheers

I use a Gitzo 1542 with a Redsnapper RSH-61 ballhead, 1.27kg all in. It supports my gripped 7D with a 70-200 2.8L II if I need it to. The benefit of a support that you can carry easily is worth every penny to me, as I now only take my Redsnapper RS-283 & RHS-12 combo out with me if I have a specific need for them. The Gitzo/RSH-61 is half the weight, much shorter and goes nicely under the flap of my Think Tank Retro10.

Pretty similar to my setup...

I went for the Markins Q3T as a seriously fantastic head to fit on my 1542T :)

My Redsnapper comes out when I can use the car :)

How do you get 1.27kg ?

The RSH12 weighs 670 grams, that's 1.670 (the 1542 is 1.00kg)

Just being picky as its still a lovely combo :)

I did exactly the same thing a few months ago...brilliant tripod, it's suprisingly sturdy so much so that I now use it 90% of the time...my aly tripod only makes an appearance in storm force winds;)

With respect, I think you misread. I use the RSH-12 on the Redsnapper legs, and the RSH-61 (268g ) on the Gitzo legs. 1kg + 268g = @1.27kg ( I rounded up ) Did I mention that the RSH-61 is all of £29.95? The value for money is unbelievable. Also I waited for a looooong time until I found the Gitzo legs used at a good price at Ffordes. You can buy good kit reasonably if you bide your time!:D
