I’d like to take a compact, lightweight travel tripod when we go to Alaska.
I’ve ruled out the idea of one made from carbon fibre because the for the amount of times I will use it, I can’t justify the additional expense.
Anyone have a suggestion for an aluminium travel tripods for a max of £100?
I would be using it with my 50D and 10-22 / 24-105L.
I want to be able to attach it to my bag so I can take it on the plane as hand luggage so the more compact the tripod is, the better

I paid £30 for my Cullman travel pod, it's not CF but it is light and sturdy and packs up small. I also have a Monfrotto entry level which was about £50 and I have flown with that but in the hold luggage not attached to my bag.

It looks like the one on this page http://kohscamera.com/Cullman_Misc.htm
(Alpha Ultra Lightweight Tripods) typically it's dollar for £..

Ohhh Alaska I'm green!!!!

I did Alaska with a Velbon Ultra Luxi F (I do all my landscape with that) - very good, and just over 1kg if you want to do hiking or camping out (or if you do float-plans to Katmai you can't take much on those at all!)

Thanks puddleduck, it looks like the Luxi F is discontinued but the Ultra LUXi-L ll looks very appealing as it can hold 3KG.
Seems like a lot places don't stock the Ultra series as I would like to have a look at one before I buy.
We will be going to Ketchikan for bear watching via a small plane and they have told us about the weight restriction.

I too can recommend the Ultra Luxi F and the one you mention looks a very similar specification
If you ever get further north of London as in Cambridge you are welcome to have a try out with my Luxi F to see if it fits the bill

I might take you up on that offer.
Where did you buy it from as it seems like Amazon are the only stockists of the Ultra Luxi series.

OK, if you try to take any thing big, you'll be leaving it at lake side, so forget anything big. Its a tremdeous buzz taking off on a float plane, but too much weight and you start running out of lake on take-off and its Brown Alert time.

You are more than welcome if you fancy a trip up the A10
Pretty sure that Microglobe stock them which from memory is just over the road from the British Museum

My good lady bought me really good Photo vest for my birthday based on the weight limit.
Hopefully I will be okay with the camera and a lens fitted, 70-200L, extender and a couple of filters in the pockets.

Hashcake,

The Ultra Luxi L is here at a reasonable price but I believe its ver1 and not ver2 so it only goes upto 2kg, but cheap and light !

Thanks for that, after speaking to the UK distributor, it seems the Luxi II isn't yet available in the UK
These don't look suitable to hold a Canon 50D with a 70-200L attached.
I probably wouldn't use that lens on a travel tripod but I would need to consider that it could hold the weight.
I'd be interested to know what kit you guys who own a Velbon Ultra Luxi have used with it.

hashcake where did you purchase from in the end would like to get one as well

I've not bought one yet but I'm going to visit Microglobe when I get a chance and have a look at one.
They seem okay on the price so if I like it, they'll get my money.

hi i'm going to usa for three weeks and want a lightweight tripod as space is limited, probably one of the redsnapper models. I just dont know what tripod head to go for? I am relatively new to photography and wondered if anyone had any advice!
thanks

It's a great travel tripod and use mine for travelling in Africa. I did change the head for a Manfrotto 484 ball head and have used it with both a 40D and 5D with 400 5.6. Haven't used it with the 1D III yet, but fingers crossed.

Got this one free with 30€ worth of prints which you're welcome to...
