Hi everyone.

I have used Lightroom a few times over the last couple of months and enjoy playing around with the various things on there to see how I can try to make a shot look better.

More recently I have been taking photos in RAW, now when I have tried to put them on Lightroom it has asked me if I'd like to sign up for a month free trial (which I accepted). After the month is over, I guess it will cost? It's strange how only since uploading RAW images it wants to charge me.

I don't expect things for free but as I don't use LR that much, I don't think it would be worth the £8 a month to use it.

Could anyone please suggest a cheaper/free alternative please?

Buy the perpetual license for a one off cost. Once you get used to Lightroom you will be using it all the time.

You can buy Lightroom as a standalone product rather as a subscription. The latest version is Lightroom 6 but depending on your camera you may be able to get a second version that's compatible with your camera. You don't have to buy each version update so you can use an older version unless you buy a newer camera and have to update to ensure it's compatible.

I would go with this option. You may be able to pick up a used lr5 for about£45.

Thank you all for your replies.

I'll carry on with my trial then look into getting LR 5.

Thanks again, Matt.

You could put up a wanted ad for LR5 in the classifieds wanted section. Someone may have a copy they could sell you if they have gone to LR CC.

Good idea Rob, cheers.

I've got a month of my free trial to use. I could post in there after that.

Is you free trial version 5? Just remember if you do try that way LR is not backwardly compatible.

Ok thanks. I'm not sure which one it is. I have mainly been using the iPad version.

I've come up with another issue now which I can't resolve and I have another question. (Sorry for all the questions).

I went out Sunday and took various shots, came home, transferred a few across to my iPad camera roll, then uploaded to LR from there, everything was fine.

Took my camera out on the dog walk this morning, took shots, uploaded a couple to iPad this evening and went to upload to LR, everything is fine apart from I have no EXIF data available. The data is available on my previous shots but not on any new ones. Don't think I've changed any settings, just can't think why they won't show. All images shot in RAW.

Any ideas?

Actually, it was just me being stupid.

I had transferred images through cable to iPad on Sunday and Wifi today. It must not pick up the Exif data over wifi.

Lightroom is an amazing tool for photographers and editors and especially useful for workflow, I still use Lr 5 however Lr CC is a little expensive pcm in my opinion.

If you are using RAW files on the Lightroom iPad app then your free trial is most likely Lightroom CC. Some of the Lightroom mobile app function is only available for subcription users, if you are thinking of downgrading after the free trial be aware that some of the functions won't be there on the previous Lightroom versions. The lightroom iPad app is quite good, I often try some quick edits whilst away but always edit again on the desktop when home.

Ok thanks Rob.

Yeah it's something I enjoy doing and just find it fun uploading to the iPad. It's quick and very easy to use.

I would suggest that once you get into using Lightroom on a PC or Mac then it's an invaluable wokflow tool. The cataloguing feature is brilliant, editing, cropping etc good, and the print/web support is great also.

Single app licence of Lightroom 6 is about £104 from adobe (downlaod the software, apply the licence). V6 is the last of the standalone products, you can use dehaze in it with some additional coding, easily found on the internet (basically code is in there but sliders aren't).
Otherwise V5 is good, you can usually pick it up cheap, or you can buy any earlier version and then pay the upgrade cost to V6, sometimes that works out cheaper. Upgrade cost is £59.09

If you've CC and want to convert to standalone, theres good instructions here: http://owenbillcliffe.co.uk/lightroom-6-standalone-upgrade/

Or you can go with the CC subscription which is about £100 a year (8.57 a month) which also gives you Photoshop
