In Lightroom can you get it to organize all your photos for you?

Ah cool, any chance you can post a photo of how they are organized?

Is it by date?

select 'all photos' in the catalogue (down the left hand pane - if it's not there, press the tab button on your keyboard).

Then along the top, filter by metadata, and you can then select the date taken on. If you want to sort by capture time / date, along the bottom of the grid view, there's sort options.

Do you mean sort within Lightroom or sort on your harddisk?

Lightroom can sort by either and it sorts them by how you tell it to sort them!

Well ive got a stack of photos in various folders that need some sort of organizing.

On the import to Lightroom you can get it to move them to a new location sorted by date.

I have mine sorted by year/yyyy-mm-dd but you can tweak the settings yourself. Your best option is to have a look at some of the tutorials online, then download the trial and have a play.

Ive got a test folder of images that Iam having a play around with ive got a folder imported to LR, and selected metadata.

Is it best to arrange by date year/yyyy-mm-dd ? Do I just export them to I directory I Choose on my HDD?

Arrange them however you want, it's just a case of finding something that works.

I only export when I need to, for uploading or sending to a printer. Everything is stored in Lightroom so I don't see the point in keeping a second copy.

So lightroom doesnt re-arrange all your photos into folders/sub-folders on your hdd?

It can and will if you want it to,

e.g. you can create an empty folder, import all your existing photo's and LR will copy or move the files from where they are, to your new location and order them based on the rules you define.

Mine are in folders for

Year / Month & Day

Then you just sift through them and tag them all with keywords.

Yes, Lightroom can organise your files on the HD if you tell it to.

I really suggest looking at a few tutorials online and downloading the 30 day free trial, as when you start playing around with it you will get a good idea of what you can and can't do.

Yes. Lightroom is a photo management programe, and you can get it to organise your photos however you want it to.

Ok thanks not got much time at the minute going to have a play over the weekend with it.

Is LR's main use to organize your photos-and then you import then into PS to edit?

Lightroom is a full workflow tool, importing, organising, processing, output...

For extremely detailed edits with multiple layers etc you may need to import into Photoshop, but I've been using Lightroom since version 1.0 and have never needed to take anything into Photoshop.

I used video tutorials from the Adobe website, but I'm sure they will be much along the same lines.
