lightroom vs photoshop

Maybe make a Poll so people can vote?
I prefer Lightroom for noise reduction tbh. Not really tried it in PS, but I use LR for workflow so moving to PS just for one thing would be time consuming

I've never had a problem with the NR in LR (god all these short names for things ) I've used it at ISO3200 and made a 30x20" poster print from it.

Lee, the latest LR3 is far better than LR2 for noise reduction. The big advantage of photoshop over LR is that you can mask areas where you want lots of noise reduction whereas with LR the reduction is applied to the full picture.

Yeah it is, not sure if it used to be...

Anyway, consider this another vote for Lightroom.

Use lightroom for most of my editing. I find that it is more subtle than photoshop. Still use photoshop for more precise editing. NR in lightroom can give pleasing results with the minimum of fuss, where as photoshop takes a little longer to get the required results.

Thanks for your suggestion and comment, I am really looking for someone to say they have used both an know the difference to find out if it's worth me buying LR.
CTRL / will help with basic shortcuts.

The more I use LR the less I go into PS.

I frequently use both CS4 and Lightroom,

CS4's noise reduction is comparable to LR imo (Filters->Noise->reduce noise) though you have to spend more time fiddling.

The way I work it is thus:

Every photo gets basic levels, sharpening, NR and tweaks in LR
Photos where LR isn't getting me what I want go into PS
Photos that I really really like go into PS for more detailed work
Everything gets a final tweak in LR, then it's exporting time.

The two tools can and should be used in conjunction, Lightroom's great for giving lots of photos a quick once-over and keeping your collections organised. However, if you want to get the very best out of a photo you'll need photoshop's masking/layers/filters.

I use Photoshop plug-in version of Noise Ninja for noise reduction -superb NR program and IMO better than the noise reduction in either LR or PS. I do a lot of bird shots and selective NR is a must so LR is out for me.

Yep, Lightroom for me too. I use it to organise and flag photos when I've been shooting an event, and then I edit them in LR too. Never had any problems, but if I want something more advanced I go to Photoshop, and for my HDR I go to Photomatix.

I mainly use LR v2.7 and elements 6 on my iMac. I start in LR and either save if good enough or open in Elements for further tweaking. I have thought about PS5 but don't know if i would benefit seeing as LR is such a good product and is basically ACR with a few more bells and whistles. I just wish LR had levels as a seperate window.

I just use Noise Ninja, bought it years ago back when I only shot a D100 that needed noise reduction for anything ISO400 or higher. :)

I don't really do noise reduction for 99% of my images, but when I do need it, I use Noise Ninja.

You can download noise profiles specific to your model of camera and ISO you're using to give the best results.

It must be a good 5 or 6 years since I bought it, I even lost it a couple of years ago, but I emailed them a few months ago, they checked their records and sent me my serial number and a download link to the latest version, great service. :)

.

Are there any good tutorials for lightroom?

Sorry, just read post 16..

Lightroom for me also - the noise reduction in LR3 is very good.

For me I use Photoshop for website design work and fine re-touching of photographs. But Lightroom is definitely far better for general photo processing and provides a more fluid workflow when dealing with large volumes.

Am I missing something or profiles for Canon 7D are not listed there?

Do people use a different camera profile for it?

I have no idea, never shot one. You could try dropping them an email.

I think most are user contributed, but I believe there's instructions on there for calibrating your own (then you could submit them, so they have a 7D profile!). :)

If you don't see your camera listed below, you can create your own profiles using the profiling chart included with Noise Ninja. Creating your own custom profiles can give you as good or better results than the stock profiles.

The best Lightroom tuts and free as well are on 'Lightroom Killer Tips' by Matt Kloskowski.

They have all the latest stuff and they go back a couple of years as well.

Look how Lightroom 'saved' this image for me:

Before with to much noise:
