Lightroom Slow to build Preview Images

Hi All

First of all I must confess to being a very late adopter of Lightroom, but starting to force myself to use it more and more.

but one issue I have is how slow it builds image previews, I have a lot of high resolution film Scans, with most of them being over 100meg each so a first time visit to any directory in Lightroom is a very very slow process as it slowly builds a preview, it also only previews those thumbnails actually shown on the screen, so I have to slowly scroll down allowing it to build its previews.

Is there any way to get Lightroom to build its previews in the background, so i can just tell it to read and build thumbnails for every image in the library.

I am sure there must be but cannot find it in the settings options

Thanks for any help with this

Paul

How slow are we talking? It is a slooowwww process anyway and big film scans will be worse. You can work whilst its building in the background, but each preview must be there fior the image you are looking at. Normally I go and have a cup of tea/to bed/go to the pub whilst its building

Trouble is it will only build the previews for the group of images actually showing on the screen, all the rest just sit there until I scroll down one page at a time, if I don't manually scroll down after each page it does not generate the preview images.

I have been on Google looking at this and it does seem to be a common issue with users.

Its almost making me go back to Bridge which although just as slow, it did build them in the background.

If you're using LR 6 try going into the Lightroom Preferences and click the Performace tab then uncheck the "Use Graphics Processor" box.

I set it to build full size previews as I import into LR; then go & get a mug of something. Then if it was a big shoot, follow that with a glass of something.
Faststone ImageView, Perfect Browse or PhotoMechanic are great for high speed culling & rating prior to importing.

Howsabout, in LR:
Edit > Select All, then...
Library > Previews > then choose which type of preview you wish to build (Standard-Sized, 1:1 or Smart)
