Lightroom sharpening.

Hi guys.

I've been using lightroom for a couple of months now, but something I still struggle to understand is how to utilise the sharpening tool, and noise reduction tools effectively.

I know the principals of what they do, but using them to benefit my work without over / under sharpening is something i'd like to improve on.

What techniques do you use when on this stage in the post editing process?
 
You need to understand what each of the sliders do. Masking is probably the most important slider to understand. Lots of vids out there (I think Julianne Kost has a good one on adobe.tv)

hold down the ALT key while moving any of the sharpening m(or noise reduction) sliders, it gives you a far more useful view of the effect they have
 
Remember there are two forms of sharpening. Input and Output. When you print LR adds an amount of output sharpening in the form of print sharpening. You can also add sharpening for the web. I mention this as the controls in the Develop module are input sharpening. You can get over enthusiastic with this, and whilst the images may look good on your computer, by the time output sharpening has been applied they can look very unphotographic.

So apply input sharpening with care so that when output the image still looks fine.

I'm very gald this question was asked as I've also been struggling to understnad this. As a result have only braved printing once and it turned out awful despite looking good on screen. Now off to check outb those links. :)
