I'm new to Lightroom so be gentle with me - please!

I've got some presets from t'interweb. Following the instructions it tells me to
"Download and unzip the presets file and open the resulting folder
In this folder you will find the presets in the Lightroom folder, they are the files with the .lrtemplate extension.
Open Lightroom 4
Choose Edit>Preferences
Go to the Presets tab, Click Show Lightroom Presets Folder
Copy the template files to their corresponding folders"

Which is fine except what are the corresponding folders?

I've tried to copy one across into a random folder to see what happens. In the Develop mode it doesn't show in the presets on the LH side, but if I click the brush icon then it is under the custom section.

How can I get it, and the others into a folder in the presets section? I've created a new folder already, but I can't find it anywhere in the Lightroom directory.

I know little about 'pooters and am struggling. Help please!

I'm on LR5 not 4.

Edit....

I've just gone to the new folder I've created in Presets and hit the Import button, selected the preset and get the error message
"The preset file was the wrong sort of template"

What am I doing wrong?

Have you restarted LR after copying the presets into your folder structure?

My downloaded ones are all contained in this location once you click the "open preset folder" button in preferences:

\Catalog\Lightroom Settings\Develop Presets\User Presets\<put folders / presets in here>

Anything in a folder in that location has its own header in the Preset view in LR, any presets in the root come under 'User Presets'.

Yep, I've restarted Lightroom.

I don't have "open preset folder" just "show preset folder"; don't know if this is significant.

But when I click "show..." I don't get Catalog/Lightroom etc" showing anywhere.

The only path I can see is Local Disc(C:).Users>my name>App Data>Roaming>Adobe>Lightroom and there's nothing like yours in there.

I cannot see Develop Presets/User Presets anywhere. I originally assumed that this was the location, but I can't find it.

"Show preset folder" is fine, i couldn't remember the exact wording.

I have the option of "store presets with this catalog" checked so that'll probably be the difference in the exact path. Do you have the Lightroom Settings folder that you can see in once its brought up your preset folder?

The other alternative is do a search of your C drive for a "user presets", turn on hidden file / folders so it'll find it in your App data folders if its there.

This is my path when not stored with catalog:

C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom\Develop Presets\User Presets\

Yup been through that to no effect.

Now that does make a difference. The presets appear under the presets section, but not when I click the brush icon. Sems to have moved from one side of the screen to the other!!!

And now I've got to go to the dentist. Not been a good day!!!!

Hi

Try the Adobe tutorials for LR. they are very good and may be of a help.

Thanks I did that first. All that gave me was the error message mentioned above. That's why I thought I'd ask on here(y)(y)

Just read your last post you said click the brush Icon? Do you mean the Adjustment Brush in the Develope Module? If the presets are in the preset section you just click on the required preset and it will apply that preset to your image, to undo the preset go to Edit click on it and a box will drop down, the first thing in the box is UNDO what ever preset is applied to that image.
This is for LR4.

Sorted it - I think.

There are two different types of presets here. Development Presets and Local Adjustment Presets. I never knew there was a difference, but if I treat them differently then I get the desired effect. They load correctly and I seem to be able to use them. I was only trying one at once - just in case - and Sods Law seems to say that I've been working against myself all the time. Wish I'd been told that when I downloaded them!

Yes you use the ajustment brush for prehaps lightning a area of the image, the develope presets effect all the image normally. I have been working with LR for quite a while now and love it, I suggest you get The Silver Efex Pro2 plug in for your mono images.
If I can be of any help please contact me.

Thanks for your kind offer. I'm new to LR so don't understand all the bits and bobs of it. I have Silver Effex already on CS5. All I've got to do now is work out how to wsitch it across. That's for tomorrow!
