Lightroom missing files

Hello, I have just backed up all my photos within lightroom and have imported about 1000 photos from a folder on my hard drive.
Each time I open Lightroom now it states that I have missing files.
When I toggle between all photographs and then back to the missing file tab, more files became missing.
Can anyone shed any light on this for me please.
I haven't deleted any files since I loaded the new folder of pics into lightroom.
I have exported a few, but not as many as 183, which is the tally of missing photographs to date.

It did help once I had plugged the external hard drive in, on which the files are located (plonker)
I still don't know why if this was the case, 860+ photos were not classed as missing files. ?
