Good evening,

Please, can anyone suggest if this is a good course to buy or if anyone may have a better suggestion? I am planning to spruce up my photos that are simply sitting on the computer and upload them to a gallery similar to SmugMug (or if anyone can suggest an alternative to SmugMug, please) so the photos can be shared online with friends and family. Many thanks. :)

In all honesty, you could probably learn more by trial and error & You Tube!
Appreciated your suggestion, Lee. I was looking at a more streamlined approach from points A-Z and not having to go all over the web looking for learning material hence decided to seek help over here. Thanks

There are plenty of basic / getting started in LightRoom Videos on YouTube right from importing and basic editing.
All my LightRook knowledge has come from YouTube and trial & error .
Look at this web page as all my photos have been edited in LightRoom

I agree. Attending any course will not make one an expert. However years of regular use and experience could. Fortunately, I started using LR from V2 and have thus built up a lot of expertise over time. There are gaps in my knowledge but these could easily be plugged, if necessary by more Trial and error or You Tube. However, I do not need to be familiar with 100% of LR to achieve what I want. This may be the same for the OP.

The cheapest way is as @LeeRatters suggests.

The link you're thinking of is likely basically the same you're just paying for it. You'll still need to watch along and try it yourself. When you get stuck you can always come back here and post questions and there are a lot of people happy to help.

If you need/want something interactive to get through the learning curve faster, that will likely cost quite a bit more.

Thank you all for your great suggestions, links and advice. What is the best LR option you all may have opted for(Cloud, Classic etc)?

I still use LR5!!
I too have a copy, Lee. When I opened it after a long time I could only see grey background instead of images. I tried to google why and noticed that Adobe wasn't supporting older versions since it is promoting the subscription model on Cloud and hence the reason. Please, could you let me know if I may be missing anything here? Many thanks.

I have LR Classic with PS from the Adobe package. I am quite happy to pay the monthly subscription and software is always up-to-date. The cost is a small fraction of what I spend on camera kit or attending places or events for photography. In fact it is slightly less than I used to spend p.a. on LR/PS before the subscription model when I paid for updates every other year.

Not sure what you mean by just a grey background.... Completely plain? No icons or buttons showing? Do you have a screenshot?

I've been using 5 since I bought it for about £90 in 2015!

I suspect that is because you are trying to import images that have already been imported.

I follow a chap called signature edits

He talks fast and whizzes through it but you can actually slow him down in settings at the bottom and change the playback speed.

I too am still using 5.7 but I think this year could be the year I move on. Current camera and lenses are not supported and I'm using the dng converter and it's just becoming more of a workflow pain. I tried a trial last year and it messed up my catalogues which put me off but I also couldn't see huge advantages but the recent changes to masking and the new camera might well be the turning point. I've tried lots of other software but Adobe is best, for me anyhow.

What happens when you click on NEW PHOTOS instead of ALL PHOTOS?

No luck with clicking on New Photos as shown in the screenshot. What is also baffling is that some CR2 images are seen and some are not. Similar for dng images. Perhaps, I should reinstall LR5 and see if that resolves the issue.

Hmmmm.... What happens if you import freshly taken images?

It might be something to do with the catalogue. They are jpeg though so shouldn't be a file type display issue.
I haven't tried this but will do it over the weekend and let you know here. Thanks

Can you actually import the greyed out images, and if so are they still greyed out in the Library and Develop Modules?

or

Are you getting any error messages when you try to import the greyed out images?
