I'm trying to figure the best way to keep my laptop and desktop synchronised. At the moment I am using Transcend Jet elite software to copy newer files back and forth as I use both machines for processing. The problem I have is with the catologue would I need to synchronise the catologue file as well?

Store the photos and catalogue on a portable hard drive and use it on both machines?

If both machines are on the same network, store the photos and catalogue on a NAS drive? It will always depend on your network speed through how fast this is and you couldn't work on both machines at the same time for the risk of corruption.

Err, it's just struck me they are on an external HD. Only problem is that it's plugged into back of my desktop and I can't get to the lead. Solution: I will move it into one at the front. Where did my brain go?

Or dig up a spare lead ;)

Just to be sure, you have got the Lightroom Catalog and Photos backed up not just on one drive?

I am getting a new laptop and would like to use it for lightroom as well as my desktop. I currently save all my photos onto a NAS drive, is it just a matter of pointing lightroom to the nas drive? How do I keep using one catalogue that updates on each machine?

Sorry for thread hi-jacking

I just tried to do the above, lightroom will not let you import a catalogue on a network drive, anyone any suggestions?

UPDATE: I just got this working by placing the catalogue file in my dropbox folder, this updates everytime I turn either machine on so is upto date.. seems to work ok..

What I do (well when I first started using Lightroom,

Create a catalogue (On my external hard drive)
Import all my photos, etc (on the same ex. hard drive)
So all of my lightroom is done through the ex. hard drive.

I have AllSync back-up these to my other ex-HD, which is convenientaly connected to my laptop, so whenever I go on my laptop it's upto date with the catalogue.

So if I use lightroom on the desktop, it backups on to lappy too,
If I use the laptop when I'm finished it backs up to desktop ex.hd.

So which ever of the two catalogues it uses are kept upto date, so i can open either copy of the catalogue and it's fine.
