Good morning all,

Im just wondering if anyone could help me out, I know what I want to do - but not sure how to do it.

Basically, I want to host my photos on a drive (networked) and then remotely access them through an iPad.

Currently I have none of the kit required, so Im just wondering if anyone could tell me what I'd need. If you could make it as simple as possible that would be a big help!!

TIA
Nick

Have you thought of subscribing to Dropbox? Affiliate link removed I use it and I will upload photos from my studio pc and they are automatically available on my two ipads, iphone and laptop at home. Best thing ever! You get 250Mb free adn each person you introduce gets you another 250Mb. There really is no catch. Click on my link and join up and I'll get another 250. :) I've downloaded loads of photographs and not yet run out of room. You can also share folders with people and only you and them can see it.

Hmm thats interesting, hadnt heard of that before!
Do you resize the photos for viewing on an Ipad before you upload - and therefore reduce the file size too?
Thats a great option - thank you :)
Ps - the link is blocked for me at work unfortunately, but I will have a proper look tonight when I get home

Sounds good - can you send me an invite too? You get anotger 250g then i can invite too!

Can't see the point in uploading to the internet just to view on another device in your own premises. 250Mb is nothing when dealing with 5D2 files anyway.

Just get a router and a NAS drive.

think this is more computers really...moving

You can pay for extra space if you need it but despite having a studio, shooting only in Raw and saving my photos as large JPegs I haven't run out of space yet. I don't leave them there for ever, admittedly. There is a constant change of photographs. :) Whenever I'm getting close to using all my space up I introduce someone else. No one has ever said they don't like dropbox. :) So even if you get a 'proper' server dropbox is worth getting. It means you can also log in on any computer via the web to view your files when your on holiday etc.

I use DropBox regularly to send files to clients. I've got 2Gb space which is free. Not sure why Andrea only got 250Mb !

The nice thing about DropBox is that the folders on all devices are automatically synced.
Everyone I have shown DropBox to thinks it's a grat way to send files . Plus you don't need large files for an iPad, so you can get a load of images in 2Gb. If you need more you can buy space, it's not that expensive

If going the NAS drive route...

Is it simply a case of connecting the NAS Drive to a spare port on my router, and leave it turned on 24/7 - and then map the network drive on each PC so they can connect to it?

How would it work with an iPad - can you map networks drives on there too?
Edit - I would still need to export all my images in jpeg format from LR to the NAS each time anyway wouldn't I? Or is there a way to keep the two aligned?

depends on the NAS, my synology has a web interface file browser which you could use for example.

No idea if buffalo is any better or worse than other brands.

It may be different with the more expensive NAS units such as Neil has but use it expecting it to go wrong one day. I've had 2 fail on me over the years. First one was a WD unit where the drive failed and the second was a housing unit into which you fit your own drive(s). That one the controller failed and 2 healthy drives could no longer be read unless paired with an identical controller.

It may work well for ever but keep in mind it is backup and not sole storage and you'll be fine.

Have a look at the OS update for apple devices specifically "the cloud" I think it allows you to do what your requesting

Here is a link on how to use Lightroom with Dropbox. http://lightroomsecrets.com/2010/05/a-catalog-in-the-cloud/ It might be a bit slow but worth using at a pinch.

I manage my lightroom catalogues like this.. works fine, although it can be slow.. good solution though..

I also have 2 Buffalo NAS drives linked, so one backs the other one up each night at 12am.. then if we go away I take one HDD offsite just in case..

You could try Zovo?

I use it to back up 3 pcs and I can access all of the backups from any device connected to the net. The amount of data you can upload is unlimited but it does cost £19.99 per annum.
