Lightroom Import question

When ever I import my pictures into Lightroom 3 or Adobe Camera RAW it will always reset my pictures. In that say I take a picture on my camera using the B&W function or take a picture with the vivid function lightroom or camera RAW will return the picture back to colour (if i have used B&W function) or desaturate the picture (if i have for example used vivid or sunset function etc).

I hope you get what im on about because its really really annoying that it does that and I was hoping someone would know of a setting that would stop Lightroom or Camera RAW from making any changes what so ever to the images when i import them.

PS: All pictures are obviously imported as RAW files, ARW is the file extension my camera has for RAW files.

Raw files are unprocessed. When you apply a modifier in the camera, such as B&W or vivid, it only applies it to jpg files. When you import a raw file, LR or ACR can't read the in camera settings so makes an RGB image from the raw data using its own algorithms. You need to then apply your modifications in LR.

If you were to save your pictures as jpg files in the camera, they would be imported with the modifiers, but your range of adjustments available in LR would be reduced.

Manufacturers like Nikon and Canon produce their own editing software which can read the modifiers applied in the camera and apply them directly on import.

Lightroom will ignore your in camera settings.

Best thing is to create your own preset and then set that as the default.

You can create as many presets as you like and then apply them to whatever photos you like.

For example I have a default preset which is basically adobe standard 2010 (camera calibration) and strong contrast (tone curve), but I have all other adjustments (split toning, effects etc) disabled as they are mostly a bit gimmicky. I then adjust exposure and WB (temp mainly but sometimes tint as well) on each photo.

You can also use the camera calibration dialogue, in the develop module, to get basis camera settings like vivid, standard, etc.

Hi paul,

any camera settings to change the colours, are only ever applied to the jpg output.

i almost always shoot raw only. but if i shoot with the intention of converting to black and white, i choose b+w setting on the camera, then set my camera to raw + jpeg, and i can see the b+w shot on my camera.
