So! I want to use software to manage my photos. I have 3 HDDs in my pc for photos, one is for backup the other two are for new imports.
So, what I want to do is plug in my camera, have an app pop up and say "Hey mate, hows it goin?" and import all of my new pictures to one drive, then periodically back up all of my pics to another drive.

Can LR do this and is it easy to set up? Any other software advised for this purpose?

Also, can LR delete the rubbish ones? I.e. as I review the pics and find some that simply arent worth keeping, can I hit a button to permanently destroy the file?

Well kind of.

It does the "Hey dude, how's things?" bit no worries, then the import box it shows then lets you import your images to your import drive, and just under that to your back up drive.

When you delete an image from the library it give you the option to delete it from the hard disk, although that would only delete it from your "import drivr" and not your "backup drive".

Also the Lightroom database can be automatically backed up to your back up drive.

Your workflow is not to dissimilar to mine with LR. Except I add a DVD back up as well ( What me paranoid ??) .

LR will do exactly what you want. However have a look at at these tutorials.

http://www.whibalhost.com/_Tutorials/Photoshop_LR/07/index.html.

They do refer to LR V 1.0 and we are upto 1.3 now, but it will give you some idea of what can be achieved. But you've got all the modules under one roof so to speak

The upgrade to ver 1.2 was a major one so hunt up some tutorial on this as well.

Have a look at the tutorials then grab a 30 day copy from the adobe web site and see what you think.
