My laptop recently died on me but I managed to recover most of my files before I had to reinstall Windows. The problem is that I've successfully recovered my photos but all of the pp work I've done in lightroom is lost. I understand LR creates a sidecar file when changes are made but I can't find where these files are stored. Google has not been my friend but can anyone on here please help.

They are stored in the xmp file (which sits alongside the photos).

Only used LR for a couple of months so feel free to correct if I'm wrong, but doesn't LR store edits in the catalog unless you tell it to use separate xmp files?

Catalogue location should be similar to shown here:

+1 - LR doesn't create separate sidecar files but stores everything in the database file. If you were storing in XMP files (as per ACR) then you couldn't create virtual copies if nothing else

Now you mention it, it may do.

I have mine stored in XMP files. The setting is Edit->Settings->General->Goto catalog settings->Metadata->Automatically write changes into XMP

yep - you need to tell it to create them................

Thanks for the info. I've managed to recover the application data so I just need to reinstall LR and see if if works.
