After a quite bumpy road to getting my new Mac studio up and running, I downloaded CC App, PS and LR having plugged in my portable external drive. When a friend helped me set this up a long time ago, he set it up so that the saved catalogue would replace the previous one on the external drive and it would also go to a folder with all the others. I would regularly clear these so it didn't clog the drive up.

Please tell me how I can do this or post a link to someone explaining it.

Thanks

Chipper

Seems your not that comfortable using your Mac?
My advice would be to call Adobe Support and they will talk you through the process. There are so many variables it’s not viable to do it on the web as everyone has a different setup.

Are you talking about the drive backup feature?

Ideally, you want the catalogue you are using on the built in SSD on the Mac, then regular backups on the external drive.

That’s what I want to set up. It has not migrated that way.

Adobe support have been dire, rude and blaming my broadband when I asked for a route to a specific folder. 8 hours wasted. One cut the chat. Another set a download running when I told him not to meaning I had to miss a meeting- he said I would not be able to log in the next time I tried. Also not true. So, I will not take that option. Thank you though. Using my previous Mac was great, very ‘comfortable’. Everything else is now as it was. Just not this. Apart from my single licence Office stuff which now claims to be broken.

I have never used adobe support so wasn't aware of how bad it is. I understand your frustration if that's their attitude.

This youtube video explains how to move it, hope it helps.

I'm on the wrong Mac to get you a screenshot at the moment, but it is under "Catalog settings", and there's a drop-down to choose how often to back up - I go for weekly.

Hi. I have it backing up on exit. what I want to do is have the BACKUp folder on my hard drive [it's there and not being used by Lightroom] and the catalogue itself with my images on my portable drive. At the moment it is only backing up to the external drive and nothing is backing up to the hard drive.

If you read my last message, forget that.

You can change the backup location.
When you exit LR and get the Backup dialog box, you can change the location there. I assume it will remember the last location for the next time.

I have changed the location to the hard drive but I want into back up a copy on the external drive as well. I am told there is an option to do this at a second location but I cannot find it!

Well it’s what was happening on my previous Mac.

Well I'm not going to say it didn't but I've been using LR since day dot and am pretty sure there is no way to backup to two places at once.

Are you sure you didn't have a 3rd party utility making a copy of the backup?

Something like Sync Folders will do this for you.

No. Not set anything like that up. I would not k ow where to start. I do have a CCC also backing up my portable hard drive where that 2nd copy is so it was actually copied twice.

I am still not sure what set-up you had/want to get to.

Where is your library stored? You can get this from the Lightroom Classic menu, then Catalog setup.

The other possibility is that you are referring to the "Make a second copy to" feature on import, which makes a second copy of your images to the specified location.
