Lightroom graduated filter query

when I add gf to an image as I make the adjustment it does not show the effect in the main image, only in the thumbnail one.
I have to press enter before I can see the effect in the main image.
Any ideas?

Which thumbnail image is that - do you mean the loupe that can be viewed instead of the historgram? And which version of LR?

Latest version, classic CC.
I mean the thumbnail at the bottom (I have the downloaded images along the bottom as thumbnails).
Click on one and it is then main, operative image.

When you have the GF screen open check at the bottom if you have show mask overlay turned on.
If it is on the effect only shows in the thumbnail or the navigator ( top LHS)
