I shoot raw and use LR for editing so I am reasonably familiar with the capabilities of the develop module. I have been given some jpegs from a Canon 70D to edit for a family member, mainly shots from Antarctica in harsh light, lots of shadows, highlights , possibly blown.

I appreciate Jpegs do not allow the same amount of processing as raw files, but any tips would be appreciated.

That statement is the end of the story… too true.

There are not tips to a "reasonably familiar" user but do the best
you can knowing that possibly no miracle is to be expected.

Just avoid anything extreme. Brushes and regional adjustment will be fine, but don't spend too much slider time on global adjustments. You'll soon see if it's bad as you'll introduce noise where once there was none..
