ok at 70 quality and 600px on the longest side the jpegs are coming out at about 160kb which seems a little high for me

now before i go fiddling with settings and stuff does anyone else use lr to export for web or use another app to optimise jpegs from lr :)

that or i suppose this is a what settings do you use thread?

I take it that 600ppi is the dimension you want. If you are keeping the image size fairly low I wouldn't worry too much about increasing the compression level ( within reason) The image is fairly small in overall terms so some loss of quality is going to be acceptable.

Also bear in mind that JPEG compression isn't totally linear, as it takes into account the "Complexity" of the image, so you will see some variation in the file size even with the same compression setting

aye just seems to be around that regardless, just in all the apps i've ever exported in this seems to create the biggest files, pondered if anyone else had experience with this

that's said it's just 600 pixels along the longest side 600ppi would be a bit ott :)

OK just did some tests.

Set up LR to 600px and a 50 level jpeg compression. Image with little detail ( cloud shot) compressed to 66Kb. However a more complex shot ( Tree Roots) went to 166kb. Set the compression to 30 and file size dropped to 135k for the second shot. Not much of a change. Reducing it to 10 gives a 111kb file. At 5 it was still 106kb

The more detail you have in the shot the less reduction in file size you can achieve. I even tried to limit the maximum file size to 75kb, but this didn't achieve anything . as I doubt it could compress to that size of file with the dimensions specified.

if you are running LR3 you can set a max file size option on export rather then use a quality figure.

in LR2 I used to use (for web) quality=60 and size 600 px by 600 px. Depending on complexity they used to come between 80 and 120 kb

i suppose i've just been doing web design stuff since early 90s so i still bork a bit at 150kb images :)

ty for input peeps

Could it be that Lightroom is adding a lot of metadata that other programmes aren't? Do you have the minimise metadata box ticked?
