I'm getting constant crashes with Lightroom, usually a BSOD that dumps memory or occasionally just a system lock-up.
This happened with LR3 and now I have LR4.
The situation is that I am using an overclocked machine into which I introduced RAM post-overclocking. I did this to increase the RAM from 4 Gb to 8 Gb to speed up lightroom.

It's probably a bad idea to replace components in an overclocked machine and so I'm faced with a conundrum.
I can reset the pc back to default but I'm not sure I can be bothered to go through the tedium of overclocking again or I can upgrade to a new system.
I suppose I could just jog along with a standard pc but that hurts:cuckoo:

What are the big demands that LR4 makes? GPU, CPU or RAM?
There are numerous threads on the web about Lightroom crashing and I wonder if anyone here has had a similar problem.

I'm running Vista 64bit. Thanks for looking.
 
Don't have a problem with lightroom (or any other program) crashing. You should run a stress test on your memory subsystem - memtest86 would be a good start.
 
I would reset the o/c first and see if that fixes the problem. It may be that the RAM is ok at stock but often you find that when you are using more than 2 sticks of RAM then instabilities can creep in. If you can't get the speed you want then I would upgrade.

What are you running now Laurence?
 
As said above, the first thing I would try is to reset the bios to defaults and see if that fixes the problem. Take it from there, over clock until you get the instability back and then step back one setting.

I must admit it never occurred to me that the RAM was bad:bonk:. I've got a copy of memtest on a floppy so I'll give it a go.

I'm running a Q6600 @ 3.51 on an Abit IP35 pro, I built it about 5 years ago so it's growing whiskers.

You're probably quite right about re-setting the system to stock and then winding it up again

It's a magic word alright. I went Mac about a year ago so don't have the fun of building and speccing new PC builds any more. At least it gives the wife one less thing to moan about though!

I'm not suggesting it is, but memtest will probably help figure out if the overclock is making the RAM less stable....

It's worth a shot before resetting the o/c.

If you can't get it working, a i5-2500K o/c to 4.3-4.5GHz with 16G & decent SSD would be the way to fix it ;)

Meh, i've always had issues with Vista, regardless or Service Packs. on mutilple bits of hardware, But each to their own i guess :)

Or get a Mac that might solve it as well :P

On a more serious note- As said already, down clock back to stock speeds, and take the new ram out. Run men test, as well as CPU Stress tests :)
 
Never had much faith in memtest86, I would take out your "upgrade" sticks of RAM and see if your machine is stable first.

If it is, then it's real upgrade time!
 
if its blue scrreening what is the error it shows ? that should tell us if its memory or give some clues
 
I was having problems with crashes and slowups with LR4.
LR4.1 final version cured it.

So far all I've managed to right down is:
BcCode 124.
I'll try and be quicker next time but I'm usually banging my head on the desk when it happens.

I've had the upgrade message, I'll install it and see what happens.
Hasn't happened today no matter what I've thrown at it!
 
Just an update, I upgraded to LR4.1 and it worked for a while but then crashed.
This morning I undertook the painful process of de-overclocking the pc and surprise surprise LR4 is totally stable however I "abuse" it!

Also, the system does not seem any slower than when it was overclocked. Problem is that now I've got early onset computer upgrade fever.
