Whenever I try cloning/healing in lightroom regardless of the feathering setting the cloned out area always has a hard edge and doesnt blend in with the background.

I move the selection around but to try and find an ideal position but still a hard edge.

If I make the selection smaller you it makes it difficult to go over an area already done.

So basically is this just how it is with lightroom (cc/5)? Or is there a way I missing that?

Bryn

You can feather the edge extremely/maximise as one of the options

One trick is to also then clone a second time over the original blemish at an opacity of say 30-50% which can help to deal with difficult areas.

Bryn, I get the same problem - just hit and miss in LR depending on the image …. I always have to go into PS to get anything descent

Feathering edge makes not difference I have had it at max and its still cloned/healed with a hard looking edge.

Thanks Bill it's a pita, though I do need to learn PS better. Hope Adobe sort it then no need to go into PS for me.

Hi Bryn I've never even tried to clone in lightroom but use photoshop mainly the healing brush
with cloning and the healing brush you can set the hardness of the brush
it normally works really well:)

Hi Bryn I gave up a long time ago, trying to use the clone/heal in LR, as it only worked with the simpler of tasks so back into PS for me if I want a decent job :)

This such a shame as it works excellent in aperture

Thanks all... that's a shame time really need to practice PS.... have to wait for us to setup the computer desk so I can have 2 monitors (1 for phlearn tutorials and 1 for me to do the editing) :D

You do know cloning and healing work differently in LR, don't you? Not trying to make grandma suck eggs, but just in case you've overlooked that.

Care to explain as it no way as easy or good as aperture version. But saying that I've got move to LR since aperture no longer being improved

Cloning replaces one area with another, while healing tries to blend the areas and can sometimes give a tonal change.

Yes I realise there is a difference but both tools leave a hard clear edge where you have brushed, I find it annoying.

It's still relatively new to me also, but what I have found is, if I brush the whole area (background) it blends in better. This maybe not possible with your pics but it works okay for me with Bird pics.

I'll give that a go :D

Forgot to add in earlier post, Just take it slowly around the main object otherwise you will loose the detail. I just go over branches etc.............

Seems to work here.

Definitely something is amiss at your end. Just googled it... can't find anything on that specific problem either.

Thanks David I will try it with something like that... Its so frustrating to have images where cloning/healing has obviously taken place by the edges.

Remember that the cloning/healing tool in Lightroom is the spot removal tool and is designed for removing dust spots rather than heavy duty cloning.

I didn't know that thanks for the info... might explain the problem

I found it a PITA too - I do all mine, mostly dust-spots, in PS - much more reliable

Dave

I'm really glad its not only me as David said nothing shows up when googling.

Which is why I do all mine in Photoshop as well. Lightroom sucks hard as a retouching tool. That hard edge problem is not normal however, as the video shows.
