Lightroom Classic without Photoshop

Yes it is, which is part of why I said "generalising to the extreme". And, I don't disagree with what you have written, but I am aware that many people never use PS (only LR), and equally many people never use LR, preferring a Bridge/ACR/PS work flow.

But I wasn't thinking about the obvious pixel editing capabilities like major cloning, composites, channel swapping etc, I was still thinking of basic editing e.g. dodging and burning, simple selections, subtle colour adjustments etc. which I find more precise to use, and easier to manage, through layers in PS than in LR.

Nearly all of the time, I could "get away" with using LR (or C1 in my case, which is a bit closer to PS than LR is). However, laziness and familiarity usually keeps me in C1 longer than I should, But when I do go into PS, I'm always struck at how much easier things are in PS, and understand why so many of the photographers I follow use PS as their main editing tool. I've only started to seriously use PS in the last year or so, but I wish I had done it years ago.

Maybe I need to try and explain what I mean by "easier", because LR is easier to learn, but to get an image processed to match how I see it in my head, and remember it from the time of taking, is much easier in PS. Or at least its becoming easier as I put the time into properly learning PS.

I suppose, I feel that the difficulty of learning PS (or Affinity Photo), is possibly stopping people finding a more satisfying way of editing their photographs. Not for everyone of course, but coming from the film days, I feel that 50% of a photograph comes from the "taking" and 50% from the "processing" and PS feels a better match to the way I want to work.
Any YouTube vids giving examples of using photoshop to do basic editing?
thanks

Not exactly ploughing a lot of the turnover back into R&D then.

Gross profit figures there tell you nothing about that; R&D is paid for out of GP.

GP is the difference between sales revenue and costs associated directly with those sales.

Setting VAT aside, if you buy a widget for £10 and sell it for £20, your GP is £10, 50% gross margin, brilliant!

However, you still have to pay for salaries, heat, light, etc. (or R&D) which are operating costs. Those might cost you £5, so your operating profit is £5 on the sale. You then may have to pay £2 interest on your loans and £2 for corporate income taxes, so the net income available to your shareholders ends up as only £1.

You can make a good GP and still end up losing money.

E2A: Adobe Q2 2022 figures

Revenue $4.3bn
GP $3.8bn
Operating Income $1.5bn
Net income $1.1bn

Net income is healthy, certainly, but a long way from the headline GP figure.

R&D costs were $738m for the quarter, BTW - 19.4% of Adobe’s GP was put back into R&D

PPS The same figures show that Creative Cloud revenue is up by 12% on the year, but against a backdrop of nearly 10% inflation, that is not so spectacular.

Mmmm, I've done several paid for courses on photoshop as I find structured learning easier.

I subscribe to:

f64 academy

PIXimperfect

Andy Astbury (a mix of Rawtherapee, Lightroom and Photoshop, plus other stuff)

The joy of editing with David Kelly ( I've started using TK8 and have been working my way through the TK8 Friday, covers multiple programs )

Robin Whalley, only occasionally covers PS, but his low cost books plus downloadable files give good introductions to PS and LR

Julienne Kost

But all of these tend to just have snippets of how to do specific things in PS, or work through an edit, not an introduction to basic editing. Maybe some one else can come up with something on Youtube.

Simple question (I hope). I use and enjoy LR Classic, but I don’t want Photoshop. It’s OTT for my needs. Is it possible to buy or subscribe to LR Classic without PS?

I believe so, look for the Single Apps package option, instead of either the Photography package or the Creative Cloud All Apps package.

More financial info from Adobe .....

  • Adobe revenue for the quarter ending May 31, 2022 was $4.386B, a 14.37% increase year-over-year.
  • Adobe revenue for the twelve months ending May 31, 2022 was $16.693B, a 16.01% increase year-over-year.
  • Adobe annual revenue for 2021 was $15.785B, a 22.67% increase from 2020.
  • Adobe annual revenue for 2020 was $12.868B, a 15.19% increase from 2019.
  • Adobe annual revenue for 2019 was $11.171B, a 23.71% increase from 2018.
Adobe annual gross profit for 2021 was $13.92B, a 24.89% increase from 2020.
Adobe annual gross profit for 2020 was $11.146B, a 17.35% increase from 2019.
Adobe annual gross profit for 2019 was $9.498B, a 21.23% increase from 2018.

It looks like they're doing OK.

Still looks like a steady investment looks like it is near the bottom at the moment.

Let us know if it is possible, as I didn’t think it was.

Yes, it is possible. You only need to go to Adobe's website, and check out their plans. They offer the option of paying for just one application software that you need, or Photography Plan which is both Lightroom and Photoshop packaged together, or in my case, Creative Cloud All Apps, where I've downloaded and installed at least 5 apps.

As far as I can make out, the only single Lightroom package is for Lightroom (cloud-based), not Lightroom Classic (desktop).

This. That's just for LR CC, which is cloud based (although you can tell it to store everything locally as well). You can't get Lightroom Classic standalone

Personally, I'd be lost without Photoshop.
I do the basics in LR then polish up in Photoshop.
Also, I don't grudge the subscription either.
I have other software packages that get updated annually so to keep everything up to date there is a yearly charge.
Granted, you don't have to update if you don't want/need to and the software still works perfectly well.

I rarely use Photoshop, especially with all the new masking features added to Lightroom Classic, but I still think the £72/year I pay for Lightroom is good value for money.

Having just splashed out on the Amazon Adobe special deal myself (I'm just downloading it) I think you're probably right. It's slightly more than a regular subscription I would be willing to pay for LR alone, although I probably won't use PS myself either.

DXO Photolab has some great features too and I'll probably get in a real mess moving from one software to the other for different things...... :(

Where did you get from for £72

Amazon on Prime day/Black Friday etc, there's usually a post on here when it becomes available.
