Edit My Images
No
Having just installed lightroom on a new computer, is there a quick way of inporting all my images in one go, or do I have to import one folder at a time. All my photos are on an external hard drive along with the lightroom back-ups.

you should be able to simply import the library/catalog. Lightroom is quite good at automation, open it up, select 'import from catalog', find the appropriate file and then let it do it's thing...
you shouldn't have to ask it to find a back-up, just the catalog file

Lightroom importing can be a bit of a mystery somtimes, however I *think the following will work.

Put a single photo in the root directory, along with all the other directories. Import that single folder to lightroom. In the library module you now have access to that folder and single image in the browser on the left. Right click on the directory name, and go for "synchonise". Then import all. It *should I think import every directory and folder below the root folder that contains images.

Ie. Lets say your direcotry structure is something like

photos
people, animals, plants, landscapes

put a single photo into the photos directory. Import that one photo. Right click on "photos", synchonise, and all other directories under it should get imported.
