Hey everyone

So I trawled the forums with a few search terms pertaining to my question, but only met really long threads with endless reams of writing.

Is it worth purrr-chasing Lightroom 4 for PP if im still shooting in Jpeg?

That is the question. The question is not should I shoot in raw?

Currently, because i'm a cheap skate, I edit in GIMP. I wondered if it is worth buying LR for post processing. I've heard a lot of good things about it and watched a few YT videos and tutorials. I'm not so much a fan of going to epic lengths to save a photograph, it will find my delete key fairly fast if it is not mostly right in camera but I do like making already good photographs shine with post, and it's fun too.

Thanks

Peg

Personally, I'd say no. Like you, I used to shoot jpeg all the time and used nothing more than Picasa. They suited each other just fine. But, if you ever want to talk about shooting RAW (and as you have a 550D I'm curious why not) then my opinion would most certainly change.

Hi Rob,

May i first ask what advantage is it to you to shot in Jpeg?

Secondly with LR you do not have to go through epic lengths to save your RAW file into a Jpeg.

Im a avid user of LR4 but only shoot RAW. I see no advantage for my personal photography to use Jpeg. When i started out I, like you, was sceptical about saving/converting raw into Jpeg. LR4 is so user friendly and easy to use mate this is not a worry. Even if you just shoot an image and don't want to do any PP to it just import it through LR4 and export it back out in minutes to Jpeg.

In conclusion LR4 is a powerful tool if used correctly. I would recommend it to any photography fanatic.

All the best

LR treats both raw and jpeg essentially the same, so if your images need basic editing theres no reason why it's wouldn't work for you, probably much quicker than Gimp, that said LR doesn't have the selective editing that can be had in Gimp/Photoshop, it does have an ajustment brush but it's not the same as proper selections.
