Lightroom 6

Ive been playing with it for a while now, its faster than 5.7.1 is on my PC, but not by much.
The face recognition is good, but not great and not reliable so far.
HDR merge is great, although basic. I guess its just there for creating a 32 bit file, without all the detail and colour enhancements.

I did have a hard time getting LR Cc working though. It installed fine but just wouldn't open. Turns out i had ot log out of CC and back in again.

@benc98 @ChrisE

How did you install it in the first place? If I try to download it from the Adobe site, it gets me to install Creative Cloud. If I open Creative Cloud I only get LR5 listed (which I tried reinstalling on the off chance and still get LR5). Quitting CC and loading it back up still doesn't present me with LRCC :(

19 minutes late starting, and surprise surprise, we get 19 minutes of Kelbyone adverts, seems a bit convenient to mel. There are a few useful features in LR6, but the whole presentation was spoilt by two Americans massaging each other egos. If they got down to the job in hand they could have covered many more features instead of wasting time.
I am not prepared to pay monthly subscriptions for LR and CC as I am only a hobbyist and a light user (I own genuine copies of LR5 and CS6), so am disappointed that by purchasing LR6 we become the poor relatives and not get the upgrades that will be made available for CC subscribers. Makes you feel like looking for a good alternative to Photoshop.

....Have a look at Phase One's Capture One Pro 8, Trev. Its RAW Converter engine is superior to Lightroom's unless they have seriously upgraded that component in their latest version 6.

It was just there in the CC app when i got home. Have you logged out of the CC app and then back in?
Yeah, well i think i have. I don't have a sign out or log out option, just a quit. I assume that would do the same thing...

Maybe they are rolling it out to users in batches.

It will be interesting to see if updates to work with new cameras are provided to LR6 owners, even if there are no updates to functionality. If not, I suspect DXO and Capture one will be the main beneficiaries, along with On-One if they can add in a good RAW converter module to Perfect Photo Suite.

Sorted it. Log into Lightroom, Go to Help > Sign Out. Then launch CC desktop app and log in again. It's now downloading :)

Thanks!

To everyone updating to LR6 / LRCC, make sure before you do, to backup your catalog. Everything should be fine but don't want to hear any stories of woe and sorrow

Thanks, was getting rather frustrated that it wasn't appearing on mine - did the same and it's now showing up.

Re the updates withe standalone version. Is that not the same as before anyway? I read that as having to pay for LR7 etc when they come out. I haven't had updates to LR4 beyond the usual camera raw ones. I think they're getting at new features rather than generic updates. Could be wrong though [emoji3]

They very clearly say that LR 6 will not include future "feature" updates, which is no different than what they already have.
I'm sure Adobe will still issue the normal camera updates etc. camera comparability is part of camera raw, which is updated quite often.

It's just the usual bunch that feel they are being ripped off with a subscription system that have now got the hump because those that do subscribe will get new features before them.

Standalone can be bought here. Bottom right hand corner. It will put the full version in your basket but you can edit that to be the update version;

Regards...
I wouldn't have seen that update option if you hadn't said how to do it. Not a bad update price at £59.09 either.

Can I ask what is meant by the feature updates? Are they the updates from 4-5-6 rather than .1, .2 etc? I know LR updated to LR x.1, LR x.2 etc as free for updates for new cameras, bug fixing, etc but I never thought they included new 'features'. To be honest I only expect the features that are present in the edition I purchased at that time rather than free future feature updates. Fixing bugs is more like a recall on a car, a design fault that should rectified.

Don't get me wrong, I can see how it can be useful. I think my point was more that practically its something you can use going forward but it can be a huge undertaking to retrospectively tag everything (depending on catalogue size)

I understand , though I may be wrong, that once you have tagged names it will go back and look for previous pics. It also stacks the faces it finds are similar/the same

I'm sure that's exactly what will happen. Lightroom 6 will still receive the .x updates, but not new features.
LR 6 users will have to wait until LR 7, whilst LR CC users will get new features as and when. A benefit of CC

Unfortunately there are those that will pick holes and try and read between then line, no matter what Adobe does. Quite frankly they should move on and find another program, their winging is getting tired now.

I had a dialog box pop up saying new update available so when i click it, it just redirects me to the adobe site saying page not found. Is this to just to get me to sign up for CC? I have the stand alone version of 5.7.

Don't hate me if it's already been discussed, just too lazy to look.

That's fair enough, if you subscribe to something then you should get a better service and some perks from it too. I'm not bothered about updated features hence I've stayed with LR4. I don't expect something for nothing.

@minnnt Yeah I'm getting that too.
The post you are looking for is by Finste about 10 posts up.
That's where I upgraded and am downloading - 20 mins left - will do the install tomorrow :)
Please let me know how you get on, I'm interested in upgrading but I'm away for the week soon so I will leave it a week or two before download.

It looks like I'm going to need to take the plunge soon...

Could someone explain how the workflow works for LR CC?

I currently have a iMac and a macbook.

My main catalog is stored on my iMac with the photos on a NAS/server.
I tend to do most of my editing on my macbook (working on local copies of the photos) and then copy them to the NAS when done and export the catalog back to my iMac into my master catalog.

For CC I see lots of talk of "automatically syncing" stuff and wondered what this means? Does your full catalog end up "in the cloud"? Is it just smart previews that are synced between computers?

Is the GPU utilisation a future 'feature' or is it currently include in LR6/CC? Or is is limited to CC only??

GPU utilisation is available now in LRCC & LR6. This is worth the upgrade alone!

Happy to see the GPU in my MBA is supported for acceleration.

If you use LR at the moment, it won't change your workflow much if at all. The auto-sync stuff is for collections that you designate as Lightroom Mobile so that they can be viewed in the web/app platforms, at least that's all I can see.

hmm that wasn't a very smooth upgrade. It wasn't obvious that you needed to sign out and back into CC
Had that too, but only on the Windows PC. Tried to run it after install and nothing happened. Eventually found a similar aAdobe help file that suggested the log out.
Mac install worked straight off though!

Does feel slicker to use though in develop. The Macbook only has the Intel Iris graphics but even that seems to be an improvement.

Why does the Mobile LR still NOT support RAW though?!! Aarrgghh!
I still fail to see the point of this app for anything other than showing prior edits that were synced.
I really hoped it would turn into a nice lightweight version I could use when out. Stick the SD card in to my iPad (SD card dongle) and have a quick fiddle. But no, doesn't see any of the photos, despite the standard IPad photos app being able to create previews.

/rant over :)

LR6 update is £59.09 but only by download for now.............if I recall the upgrade to LR5 was about another £8-£10 for the boxed version and presumably will come soon? link here https://www.adobe.com/uk/cart.html?marketSegment=COM&#

My GeForce GT620 video card is DirectX 11 and OpenGL version 4.3.1 so well up to the specs and also I have been running Win7 Pro 64bit for a while. So as mentioned by others what we need is the speed improvements that using all the computing "power" including what use can be made of the GPU and its RAM :)

In what way? When I import (CR2 from 5D3) I place pictures straight into my LR mobile collection and it syncs just fine so that I can see it on the browser and app.

LR mobile is working with your preview images, i.e. not the original raw files. Ajf350d, if i read him correctly, wishes to be able to import directly into LR mobile, e.g. from an sd card.

Ah, that makes sense. I forgot it uses the smart previews.

They've added some videos to their YT channel. This is probably the most useful, as it covers little things that aren't quite so obvious as the big new features.

EDIT: Also surprised they still don't support proper full screen on OS X. :/

Thanks for the YT link, will have a watch of that one especially as it is the CC/LR6 related one :)

So far, I've been asked to name a yellow flower and an owl. I think this feature does need a bit of a tweak :D

I got asked to name Jesus! You thought they'd have pre-programmed it with a few celebrities...

Our cousins across the pond will be trying to see how the FR works on images the US currency..........is it PS that has anti fraud currency recognition built in and will it recognise the likes of George Washington (or whoever is on the bills 'over there'???
