I have Photoelements 9 and the usual Canon Digital Photo Professional, but I see that a lot of people use Lightroom as editing software. If I purchase Lightroom, then what will it allow me to do that I can't already do with the software that I have?
 
Lightroom is great for storing catalogues of all your images. It's quick and easy to use. The camera raw converter is similar to others so really depends how you use it.

Lightroom not only provides 99% of my pic editing needs, it's cataloguing, keywords, rating and export functions are superb for managing a collection of images.

My image collection exceeds 100,000 now and Lightroom handles this with ease. :)

You can download a 30 day trial version of Lightroom from the Adobe web site. What I would suggest though is that before you start the trail you view some videos on how to use the software. This way you will get more out of the 30 day trial. There are numerous sites with video tutorials, but try the Adobe one first.

By the way the current version of Lightroom is 3
