Hello Everyone,

1st of all I must apologise if this question, has been answered to LR4 or CS5.
I'm now taking pictures in RAW  and now I have been given the OK by my Wife to buy.
I have been looking at tutorials of the two and how to learn Photoshop disc from magazines but now I'm totally confused to buy which one. :help:

Ian

Are you after a cataloguing and basic editing programme or a programme that will be able to do just about all the editing you ever want and then some more.

Very few people will use CS5 to its full abilities, I do a lot of editing and creating and barely touch the surface of the programme

Have you looked at getting Elements AND Lightroom - the latter is a programme that works well if you have it with Elements or Photoshop

Hi Christine,
I'm just starting out in this crazy game Landscapes, Wildlife, Motorsport I see your point and no I will never use CS5 to it's full useage. I know I can catalogue in BR & LR but it is the editing side to get the same very good quality images that are on TP and to print off to put into a mount. but at the moment with the pennies I have it's the Question of which one? because when I buy it, it will then take my full attention to then learn the software. and thank you for your reply.

Most of the time LR4 does the editing side for me.

Don't dismiss the brilliant database either, best time to catalogue is when you are starting.

Hi Mike,
You said don't dismiss the database are you talking about LR? or CS?
And thank you for your imput.

LR4 does the catalogue. Worth downloading a 30 day trial and see if it works for you.

Hi Kev,
Sorry I'm late getting back to you.
Thanks for the info and your imput, I will try the 30 day trial

Hi Mike,
Sorry I'm late getting back to you.
Thank you for your imput to my question.

Well I've been using lightroom for a few years now,Im not into heavy editing so find it great and simple to use.

I downloaded the 30day trial of cs6 today, and after 30min have given up. Maby I'm simple but its ********* complicated and I couldn't figure out how to do anything except using the bridge part which just gives you the same sliders as LR4 but slightly simpler.

I expect if you have the time to learn it would offer a lot,but if your not into heavy editing I can't see why you would use it over LR.
Then there's the cost LR is just over £100 and CS6 is over £650.

I would buy Lightroom first. If you find in several months time that you feel your creativity is being limited by lightroom then look at buying CS6. I think that CS6 would probably be a bit overkill to start with.

If it helps I have been using photoshop for about 15 years so know it quite well but for most of my photography I still use lightroom for about 80% of my editing.

I have found that Photoshop Elements is good enough, for example I managed to make a CD album sleeve using it to exact dimentions of 4.75 x 4.75, there is no difference in quality between the full version of photoshop and elements, you just need to learn how to use the software, even elements can be very complex. I also use Lightroom 4 for 99% of my photography except for the very rare exceptions, it's the best software I've ever used for organising photos

Hi Peter,
I Have downloaded the 30 days LR trial and trying to just get my head around it.
Thanks for your imput.
Love the place where you live, had family who lived in Cupar.

Hi Rich,
Thank you for your imput, I have downloaded a 30 day trial and can see a difference.
15 years with PS & LR has given me a bit of encouragement.

Hi Ben,
I have down loaded Lightroom on a 30 day trial and it looks as if this is the way forward,
just getting my head a round it all and thank you for your imput.

Ian.

I find lightroom simpler and easier to use. i like how the menus are laid out and that kind of "call to action" aimed at a photographers process for developing photos.

photoshop on the other hand, unless you're an avid user, it may seem like a complicated program to use.

If you just want totweekyour work aka just get the best out of them Lightroom will do great

But if you want to go in to the working, remove and replace what ever and mix items together then photoshop

But you say you don't shoot in raw, so your not getting the full benefit to what ever program you would be using anyway
