Lightroom 4 has landed

And most of us who run XP are running on older hardware that won't run 64-bit Windows, or at least won't run it at an acceptable speed. So, new PC, Windows 7, LR4... that adds up to quite a steep upgrade price.

Why?
LR4 will run under Vista 32 bit.

You will have to update to a 64bit Mac system if you're not on one already though.

According to DPReview review,
Lightroom 4 does not support 32-bit Macs. You must be running a 64-bit Intel processor and OS 10.6.8

Not sure how many that will affect.

i am doing a trial on 3 and got the 4 email
so you chaps think its best to go for 4...if its reduced a bit
or wait for 3 to be sold more cheaply
i see the student discount is pretty good...;)

cheers
geof

ps i am downloading it now for trial...its taking about 28 minutes

It's called completion, now Adobe don't have it all there own way, they can no longer justify ripping everyone off.

We need a really alternative to Photoshop now to see price drop on that too.

Jasc paintshop pro is close but the big thing you run into is all the 3rd party addons and plugs created by users jasc doesn't have the following Adobe does

Just got my update via download. Took about 5 minutes if that to download and install, plus maybe 20 minutes to upgrade my LR2 catalogue of ~90,000 files.

Not had an in depth play with it yet, but coming from LR2 it looks alright. Highlight control seems to be more localised (doesn't crap up the whole image like it did in LR2) which is nice.

Not noticed any real improvement in speed yet, but then my computer needs a good clean out anyway.

Full price here is $241 which is about 160 quid - so don't complain too much about rip-off Britain. ;) Upgrade is $98 though which is only a touch over 60 quid. **EDIT $241 is boxed, it's a snip at $187 (~£125) for the download.**

As mentioned, it's the same as the Creative Suite products in that you can upgrade to the full version from an education version of an earlier product. The upgrade price is about the same as buying the new education version.

You can also upgrade for the same price from any version of Lightroom (1, 2 or 3).

OK, first problem: the library filter seems to reset every time I move between folders.

So, I'm looking at one shoot, filtered by "attribute" 3 stars or higher. Then I click to a different shoot (different folder) when I come back to the first shoot (folder) the filter has reset to "none" and is showing all the images.

Major pain in the arse. Anyone else experiencing this?

EDIT: There's a filter lock which will keep the filter at (for example) 3 stars or higher when switching between folders, is there no way to have it like it was in the past. ("Locked" for individual folders)?

OK, final edit. Seems it was brought in with LR3 (I skipped that one). You have to lock filters and then go to File > Library Filters > Remember Each Source’s Filters Separately.

That was a load of hassle. Don't mind me, everyone as you were. :D

any new LR4 users... does LR4 have new web galleries, compared to LR3?

Just pre-ordered mine from Amazon...the full version for £99.99.

Does anyone know (apart from the download direct from Adobe website) anywhere who has them in stock at the moment?

Just download the trial version, use it, and enter your serial number when the purchased copy arrives...

Anthony.

I cant blame Adobe for ditching support for a decade old operating system really.

WOW don't say that to those who've converted all their RAW's to DNG's, Adobe are going to support DNG's forever.:lol:

There's a little difference between a file format and a whole OS ;)

can anyone help me with how I can get my edits from the lightroom 4 beta to show up in LR 4 full? I've just imported my entire LR3 catalogue but for the past month or so i've been using LR4 beta. So i imported the actual RAWs into LR4, but my edits aren't showing up. How can i get them?

thanks

You need to import the LR4 beta catalogue too.

Handy info though. Thanks for doing the user testing! :D

DNG is an open standard now.

If Adobe did support XP, they would have had to do a shed load more testing (and probably) coding, which would have pushed the price up.

Windows 7. Far better than Vista or XP and works on slower hardware than Vista.

I cant blame Adobe for ditching support for a decade old operating system really.

I can see their point, but as about a third of their customers are still using XP it might not be a good business choice.

Anyone who bought the student&teacher version know how long it took for them to confirm academic eligibility?

Mine was sorted within a couple of hours when I bought LR3 and a Creative Suite last year.

Within 48hours when I got LR3 about a month ago. But you have 30days of use before you need to enter a serial number (unless you've already used that )

Just had a look at the Adobe price to upgrade my LR3, it's more expensive to download than get a shipped boxed copy.

:thinking::shrug::cuckoo:

Newb question but does it support NEF files by default?

...and No!

It depends how up-to-date your version is and how new your camera!

Hmm, as this thread was about LR4, I assumed he was taking about that, and LR4 supports all .nef files as far as I can see, even from the yet unreleased D800/D4

I've found that assuming can very very dangerous...

...especially with pedantic old sods like me about! :D

(but yup I think that you're right regarding LR4)

The highlight and shadow recovery seems much better with LR4, much more natural...

Yes, I thought so, thanks. But I think the main consideration for me is the lack of RAM. This machine only takes 4 GB maximum. If Win 7 takes up more memory than XP, I'm better off where I am as I'm running Lightroom 3.6, Elements 10, plus various plugins, all at the same time.

LR4, and Nikon D90. Also have a D40 as backup. Didn't realise there were different "newness" of nef files. Still ok?

Never seen that on LR3 but well impressed with it on LR4.
