Hi my name is Diana I am using lightroom 4 for editing. The program seems great for editing I get a clear view when I zoom. However, after I export these images and I open to view when I zoom they appear pixelated.. Is this normal? I am desperately trying to get these photos done for a friend and do not want to send something that can not be made bigger should she choose on her end.
Any help would be appreciated. p.s. I updated lightroom and paid close attention to export dialogues

Hi Diana and Welcome to TP

Can I jump in and follow along? I'm just trialing LR5 and had my first go at batch editing about 80 photos tonight. Then tried exporting them and they're all quite small, the largest being 1mb and others 6-700kb. I exported one via CS5 for a test and shapen which made it about 4mb. The kind of images I'm working with would be about 10mb of I just opened it and worked through CS5. So wondering if I'm doing something wrong.

I was curious as to whether this is a similar issue to the OP?

Hi my lightroom settings are

format jpeg
quality 76
color space adobe rjb 1998
file sz 100k

image resize to fit w/h
w/500 h/500 pix
resolution 72 per square

the above settings are what i was using

appreciate any response

Based on the above your settings are set for what I'd class as small web images.

Everyone will have their own preferences and settings in terms of what works for them, but for me, if I'm printing, I change the resolution to 300 pixels per inch, change the width and height drop down from pixels to inches - and then set it to (in my case) 9 inch x 9 inch (as I print 9x6 prints - so this covers both portrait and landscape images) and a quality setting of 100.

If you think your friend will want to print larger - then change the setting accordingly.

For example if they'll print 20x16" then set the image size to 20"H by 20"W...

This is assuming the quality of the original files will support this large an output... But that's probably another discussion :) Hopefully you'll be using a reasonable DSLR and shooting in RAW.

As Chris says your exporting quite small pics, which is fine if you just want to show them on facebook or something, but if your trying to send someone s decent quality pic you need to make it bigger in the export setting.

Hi, well I made the adjustments and it worked thankyou so much with my LR settings.

Good to hear you've improved your output.. Of course remember that these new settings will mean bigger files.. Fine if you've just got a few photos here and there.. But if you're going through thousands of frames, you'll find your storage will get eaten up a bit quicker :)
