Hi

OK i have been running LR4 fine and upgraded when needed. I'm currently on 4.4 and all has been well until now. When viewing images they don't look sharp! Before when clicking on a thumbnail the image would pop up all fuzzy then get sharp real quick....always has done. This also happens when zooming in to the image, it just looks fuzzy, it does not click into a sharp image to work on, the images come up but don't get sharp. Also there is not always a thumbnail in the top left above the presets. Also if you add a preset the image just disappears!!

I have deleted and re-installed the program but to no avail.

Any ideas?

I'm not really a big Lightroom fan/user, but I have seen that there is an option to set the render quality on import. Some set a low quality for a quick import, say minimal or embedded, and as you say, the image becomes clearer as renders full size. Some set the render quality to 1:1 to do away with the need for the image render/refine when developing, but it takes longer to import.

If the original files become disconnected from the catalog, say you move the original files, then there are no original files to refine, and so stay may stay at a lower quality.

That could be an explanation for your problem. Hopefully someone with more Lightroom knowledge can confirm, or offer another explanation for your problem.

The images are all in the same place, I have moved nothing. I will however look at what you suggest. Maybe the PC has done something daft. I know I have not moved anything.

Thanks for the pointer chaps

When you import does it do a two stage pass, import the photos then render?

I have just re booted the pc and it's still the same.

I do not get a ? in the top right of the thumbnail. It's weird that if you add a preset the image just disappears! I'm really stuck!

It used to. You click on the thumbnail, the large image pops up in the main window and small window above the presets then it renders......but not any more.

By the way this all only happens in the develop module!! The library module is fine!?!?!

Andy, I know this is no help but it happens to me on v3.6. I've been searching the Web and it appears to be a common enough problem but with no fix that I can find.

I find that I'll start a session, process a number of images and then suddenly they wont sharpen up in the view. Also the second monitor will occassionaly just go blank.

If I go back a couple of images and then forward again it may clear. Other times its a restart. I've cleared the RAW cache but that makes no difference; ditto Catalog optimisation.

It's been suggested that clearing all previews and deleting preferences may help. I've yet to try this.

Still searching for a solution.

BTW: I've been on V3.6 for a long time and the problem has only recently surfaced. Maybe it's related to the size of the Catalog i.e image count, or possibly a Microsoft or other update that's been applied - who knows; I dont :-(

There are many, many bugs in LR's preview functionality. It will affect develop more than library because they use different previews (though really they shouldn't).

Try this:

1. Library...Previews....Discard 1:1 previews
2. Wait for about 15 mins
3. Close Lightroom
4. Open a DIFFERENT catalogue - a new one if you like
5. Wait a few minutes
6. Close LR and reopen original catalogue.
7. Library....Previews....Render 1:1 previews

The good news is that this behaviour tends to stop happening after a while. I suspect there'sa flag set somewhere in the d/b that says "you don't need a new preview" when really you do.

Frustratingly the discrad previews button doesn't actually discard the previews (hence steps 2 - 6)

Thanks, I'll give it a try.

I have deleted all lightroom data inc catalogues and re installed but the same problem. I'll try what's suggested and if that don't work I think I'll give up!

Trying to remember the answer to this....I know that LR stashes some stuff where you would never think to look and it survives a delete and reinstall.....

You deleted the previews and emptied the trash?

I deleted everything. I even did a search and there was nothing left. I have re installed choosing a new catalog and still the same problem. I bet it's something dead simple!! :bonk:

OK PROBLEM FIXED!! It was a corrupt monitor profile!!!! Simple as that!!! So if anyone has the same problem then re calibrate your monitor!

Care to elaborate?

I put the question on the Adobe lightroom forum and one of the staff suggested it was a corrupt monitor profile meaning that the profile that was saved from the last time I calibrated my screen was corrupt. So all I did was re calibrate my screen, save the profile and bingo, the problem in LR went away and all is back to normal.

Phew!

What I don't understand is how can a monitor profile affect the rendering?

I suppose it has something to do with display pixels or something similar.

Will a graphics card settings affect LR?

That's really a too open question as the answer is obviously yes. Everything you see on your display has to go through the graphics card.

I have no idea how it caused the problem but I'm just glad it's fixed!! I LOVE lightroom and only bought V4 a few weeks ago so really wanted to get the problem sorted.
