I've managed to move my lightroom catalogue from my pc hard drive to my external hard drive, and set lightroom to launch my catalogue from there whenever it opens. Do I now need to delete the lightroom folder, that is in my pictures, to prevent all the image files from saving on to both drives, if I only want them on my external hard drive? I'm using a pc running windows XP.

The catalogue is just lightrooms list of edits to your picture files not the actual image files. If you have copied all your original picture files to the external drive then you could remove the my pictures ones but i don't know why you would want to.

Do you have another drive or something that you use for backup? I'd never be without at least 3 copies of my image files....

Because I don't want my pc hard drive to be full of raw files taking up lots of space. I want everything relating to my images on my external hard drive. I have my original raw files on discs and I'll also be backing them up on my external drive.

Hope you have better luck with discs (CD/DVD) than I have in the past. After a year or two I've found many become unreadable. Worth checking them occasionally if you only have one hard drive copy.

The files you need are the .lrcat files and 'lrdata files. These contain the database info and the previews.. You can copy these along with your images to an external hard drive, and tell Lightroom to use the new location for this information. You also have to tell it that you have also moved the image files a well.

I run multiple external hard drives which have all my images on, but I leave the catalog files still on my main computers hard drive as it seems to run faster this way , even with Firewire 800 drives.

Thanks, but it's all ok now, I've managed to do it. All I needed to do was slow down a bit and apply myself.
